Dear friends,
thanks for all the wonderful information. Even I disagree with the conclusion regarding the SHARECROPPER based on a old European feudal system is not correct, because at the end nothing changed and we are all up to the present time SHARECROPPERS in one or the other form.
Anyway I wish all friends a happy Christmas and the best for the coming year
best regards

Hallo Laura,
As a matter of fact, Reussen was a regular village (Dorf), n o t connected
with an estate. Those villages connected with estates are also called
'Gutsdorf' (plural: Gutsdörfer). You asked for the meaning of the term
'Vorwerk'--a 'Vorwerk' is an outlying estate, i.e. a sub-estate at some
distance to, but belonging to and being run by a mother estate. Whether a
place is called a Gut/Rittergut, a Dorf/Gutsdorf or just a Dorf depends on
the set up. There are estates with 'Insthäuser' for farm laborers belonging
to them; in such a case it's a Gut or Rittergut. In other cases a village is
adjacent to an estate--farmers may live there as well as estate personnel;
then it is called a Dorf or Gutsdorf. And there are villages without any
estate nearby.
You probably would like to look up Reussen on a detailed map. Turn to the
following site:

The map can be enlarged to view details. Reussen is about 10 kilometers (ca.
6 miles) south of Mohrungen. There is no symbol for an estate in the
vicinity (would be a box with a small vertical, antenna-like line on top).

Dear Wolfgang,
Greetings and thank you for your good wishes to all of us, which I return.
As a matter of fact, the American idea of the sharecropper does follow the
feudal concept of (literally) sharing crops with 'your lord' who owns the
land you work on. This is not the only European concept that survived in the
States. The much cherished ones of equality, the right to life, liberty and
(partly) the pursuit of happiness are also European (i.e British ideas: John
Locke), although many people think they originated in America.
Let's forget about the bad things of the past and be thankful that so many
positive concepts are shared by peoples on both shores of the great main.
Regards,
Rolf-Peter
