Meyer

Hello,

I am trying to decipher my father’s document with various names and places and trying to determine if there are LDS microfilms for either church records and/or civil records for these places of Nendorf, Frestorf and possibly Leipsich. If there are no microfilms, I was hoping for suggestions for how to acquire them. Since I am starting from scratch, I was hoping for some guidance to know what route to take from here.

Below is exactly as my father has it on the paper that he copied from a cousin that had gone to Germany back in 1970’s. This cousin is not alive and I cannot find any descendants alive as yet.

Johan Frederick Meyer - born 1730 and his birth was recorded in church in Nendorf, Frestorf, Germany. Johann married Margareta Elizabeth Krauskop. (These are my x4 great grandparents)

Other family in the Nendorf, Frestorf, Germany church records:

Johan Frederick’s sons:

1) Hamm Heindricks (died Sep 17, 1857)- married Elizabeth Block – May 26, 1785, 2) Johan Heindrich- (b. 1753-Feb 1865) married Katherina on Sep 5, 1785 (not sure which of these two men are my x3 grt grandfather)

-Karl Meyer (this is my x2 grt grandfather and grandson of Johan Frederick Meyer) (1823-1903) married Wilheminia

1) William

2) Karl (born in Wesfallen)

3) August (born in Bremen)

4) Amelia- died young

5) Augusta (daughter of Karl and Wilhemina and my great grandmother) born 1870 in Leipsich, died 1936 in Fort Wayne, In, married Diedrich Nahrwold in Ft Wayne, IN,

Thank you if you can help me determine how to find at least the church records for Nendorf, Frestorf and/ or Leipsich and/or if you have any guidance what route to take to makes some sense of the above information that my father recorded on a few sheets of paper in the 1970s.

Hello Tanya,
Frestorf and Nendorf are today part of the city of Nienburg/Weser/Lower Saxonary. The parish, the Lutherans belong to, is the parish of St. Michael, Nienburg. Perhaps as a first step You`ll contact the church office: http://www.st-michael-nienburg.de/kontakt/index.html. Furtheron I recommend assistance by an professional genealogist.
Good luck
Wilehlm (Thiele)

Hi Wilehlm,

Thank you for helping on the location of Nienburg and name of the Lutheran church. Yes, my Meyer family was Lutheran. Does this list provide someone that can look at my Google translated German message to offer suggestions for edits before I send it to the St. Michael's church?

Thank you,

Tanya

Hello Tanya,

Write your e-mail in English *not* in Google computer generated translation, because the results can be misleading.

If you don't understand or speak German, just use good clear English.

Most Pastor's can read English and often reply in German because it is more efficient and convenient, some find our English grammar difficult.

Otherwise someone on the list who speaks Germany fluently may do a correct translation for you.

Hi Wilhelm. I am so glad that you are on this list because you seem to have much information. I have just found out that my Meyer family patriarch had his name spelled Meier at the church he helped to build in Seguin, Texas. I have always known that this family was from Gifhorn and also find church records from Kastorf and not Kaesdorf or Kasdorf or other spellings. I have found a lot of internet records purposely contrived and it is obvious and someone is doing this by purpose.

His name was Frederich and he also went by the name of Fritz. His brother was Ernst. He had two wives. He was born February 21, 1833. I know that his father was Heinrich and mother Maria. A lot of his family is shown here:

Have you run across anything like this in your records? I believe that his papa was the original land grantor of the Alamo in Texas and that these records were falsified as is the testimony of other researchers.

Please respond and thank you for your time.

Guten Abend Tanya,

my ancestors are from the neighbour village of Frestorf, so I am familiar with the region. Look at google maps ("Frestorf,Germany")and you see the village of Frestorf southwest of Stolzenau which is the local center of the area.
The church records are in the church office in Nendorf (you see it north of Frestorf on google maps); I think you can write them in English:

Pfarramt der Kirchengemeinde Nendorf
Pastor Jens Mahlmann
Hauptstraße 28 , OT Nendorf
31592 Stolzenau

Email: jens.mahlmann@evlka.de

Reading your data I think there must be something wrong:

Johan Frederick’s sons:

1) Hamm Heindricks (died Sep 17, 1857)- married Elizabeth Block – May 26, 1785, 2) Johan Heindrich- (b. 1753-Feb 1865) married Katherina on Sep 5, 1785 (not sure which of these two men are my x3 grt grandfather)

The second man would have reached the age of 112 years!!! When Karl Meyer (your gggrandfather) was born (1823) this second man was already 70 years old!

The name Meyer is very very often here, so you cannot assume that these men are your ancestors.
Ask the church office for the birth record of Karl Meyer (about 1823) ; this record will list the name of his parents correctly and then you can follow these hints further back in time.

5) Augusta (daughter of Karl and Wilhemina and my great grandmother) born 1870 in Leipsich, died 1936 in Fort Wayne, In, married Diedrich Nahrwold in Ft Wayne, IN,

Leipzig is a very big city (500 000 inhabitants) with a lot of churches. Do you have any hint in which part of Leipzig your ggrandmother was born ?

Viele Grüße,

Susanne (Schmitz)

Susanne,

It is wonderful that you suggest to make it simple by looking for Karl Meyer's record first and go from there.

As far as Augusta's place of birth,... I am kind of confused by dad's paper, but he does have on one of them:

Augusta Meyer, emigrated at 18 yrs old (emigrated to Brooklyn, NY)

Then under all of this is Leipsich, Germany and next to that is born Nov 19, 1870. I'm assuming Augusta was born in Leipsich or maybe it means that she emigrated from Leipsich? I'm not sure what this little bit means.

Maybe if someone wants to see the 3 sheets firsthand by me sending them as attachments, one may get a different perspective than I am. Especially since you know of these places of Leipzig, Nendorf, Frestorf.

If anyone would like to see them, I have these sheets saved as jpgs and as pdf files.

Thank you,

Tanya

Hi Tanya,

if you want you can send the pictures to me : su-schmitz@gmx.net
I will look at them tomorrow and tell you my thoughts then.

Gute Nacht,

Susanne

Sue,

After thinking some more, it is premature to have you look at these
confusing papers of my dad’s. I happened to find Augusta Meyer’s death
record and on it is her place of birth as Hanover, Germany. There is now
contradicting information from Augusta’s death record and from the
information that my dad has down that Augusta was born in Leipsich
(Leipzig).

I need to do some more research on Augusta before having anyone spend
efforts looking at my dad's confusing family notes. Unfortunately, dad died
before he could organize his thoughts, however I can continue dad's family
search since at least I have a good start with his notes. Having the place
recorded of Nendorf, Frestorf is a great clue to start with. Thanks dad!

A member has offered to translate my letter to the church earlier today and
wanted to let everyone know, so no others have to spend time on this query.

I think from all of your helpful suggestions I should start with Augusta's
father, Karl Meyer to obtain his church records from Neinburg and go from
there. Plus, do more research on Augusta Meyer, my great grandmother.

Thank you all who were able to assist and suggest to me a good direction to
go from here and for the helpful links.
