"Meyer" surname difference between Meyer, Mayer, Meier, Maier Band 45, Eintrag 26

Going on my memory of what was said by my father born in Germany 1914.
And a book called German Names by Hans Bahlow
As well as other stories from my older family members etc

Meier was Frisian version that can be found on Island of Fehmarn @ 800
Contact for that island is John Kostick [jkostick@bellsouth.net]

Mayer Maier meyer is a later Frankish version of the same title that notes a
person as a steward of a land-holding lord. And later many held their own
estate of land because they had fought in wars or preformed good deeds in
the community.

Titles were names and more than one person may have held that post latter.
i.e. the bergermeister of Oldenburg was once a Hohmeyer

Yes, Places became part of names von Hohmeyer is someone who lived or worked
for my family the Hohmeyers. Hoch Meier was changed to Homeyer officially
in 1770s.

Many meiers Meyers were of the original 10 + master trades in Hanover. They
were well established by 1700s and many had their own trade shield and
later, family name shields.

More importantly for some, including myself when the family split
politically about the Kaiser, WW1 and WW2. People changed the spelling on
anything that was not official. We have 1 Hohmeyer pilot who won a medal, 2
who served the Kaiser and died, and one who spied on the Nazi officers for
the US and President FDR.

Just as from Frisia there is a Husum in the north and a Husum/ Weser in the
South. There has been a split in my family for some time. (once gross
Varlingen)
