Mennonites in Prussia

Hello list members,
Sorry for the english but my german is not very good however I can read and understand most of the posted messages. I am researching Mennonites from Prussia. Has any list member gone to the Marienburg area (now Malbork) to search for records and do they have any records there? I know about the EZA in Berlin, all of the Mennonite websites and I have purchased the book by Brandt-Goertz but I would like to hear about someone's personal exprience in actually traveling there.

Thank You in advance Vielen Dank Werner from CANADA

Hello Werner,
sorry, I cant reply to your question about research in the Marienburg area.
But your surname and the context of your research, possibly glueing to mine,
attracted my attention.
I am researching the West Prussian BASSENDOWSKI family, a branch of which
had been settling in Russia, in the 19th Century and later on in Canada.
Apparently, a family history similar to that of your West Prussian TOEWS.
As far as I know, Eduard BASSENDOWSKI , b 28.5.1879 in Nikolaifeld (near
Ekaterinoslaw, today Djepropetrowsk, former Russian Ukraine) d. in Shamrock,
Moose Jaw, SK, was married to Florentina TOEWS b. 10.1.1883 Popawa(?), Ufa,
Russia, d. 16.1.1968 Shamrock, daughter of Heinrich TOEWS (b. abt. 1837 West
Prussia, d. abt. 1915 Russia) and Elisabeth KRAUSE (b 1841 West Prussia, d.
1902 Russia).
I do not precise indications of both, their place of origin and their
religious confession: Eduards parents, Jakob BASSENDOWSKI and Regina
KES(?)LER are said to be lutheranian - not corresponding to the
traditionally roman-catholic BASSENDOWSKI clan - and to be originating from
the Danziger Niederung (district which was not that far from Marienburg).
Eduard and Florentina probably were, and are buried lutheranian, but at
least one of her sons Jacob E. BASSENDOWSKI was a member of the mennonite
church, in Herbert, SK. Her parentsorigin is unknown to me, as well.
It would be nice if we could exchange and connect our families data.

Michael

Es gab den Schriftsteller Helmut BIEGEL, *28.2.1897 Stettin, der das Pseudonym

Hans Peter,

"BIEL, Gabriel, + 7.12.1495 Einsiedel b. Tbingen." Schrieb auch unter den Namen:
"Gabriel BYEL; Gabriel BYHEL." Weitere Angaben in ADB und NDB vorhanden. Gru HPA

Hello Werner!

In the late 1980s I looked for my anchestors in Marienburg (Malbork),
therefore I used the LDS-Films. As far as I remember, there are some notices
about Mennonites in the records of Marienburg St. Georgen (ev.-luth.). And:
As far as I know the EZA in Berlin has the same records (my cousin searched
there...).

Best wishes to you

Jrgen from Augsburg/Bavaria

Danke Schoen Jurgen, for the information.

Werner
