My great great grandmother, Sophie Louise Meier was born in 1849. Per her
obituary in the Fort Wayne, Indiana newspaper, Louise was born in Jessen,
Preuss-Minden, Westphalia. I googled the word Preuss and a few sites
describe Preuss as Prussia.
I am going in circles finding nothing about Jessen being located in Minden,
Prussia, Westfalen
How is Jessen connected to Preußen-Minden, Westfalen??
I am finding history of Preußen-Minden, Westfalen. However, I find nothing
about Jessen and how it is a part of Preußen-Minden, Westfalen.
I am hoping a group member can help me determine where Louise birth place is
located.
Thank you,

Researching Meier family of Jessen, Minden-Preuss, Westfalen
The town you are looking for could be Jena. The Jessen I find is enumerated here:
The primary Jessen (in Germany) is some 400km East of Westfalen (and if she was from Westfahlen, she would not be from this Jessen; all the Jessens I find are outside of Westfalen.)
Minden, on the other hand, is an actual town/city in Westfalen see:
Thank you so very much for this important information to save efforts. I have been spinning my wheels for hours on this already.
Very much appreciate this.
I think I may have found just at this exact moment a christening on family search.org of my great grandfather, Dietrich Nahrwold at this website and the place of christening is: Windheim, Westfalen, Preußen, Germany
I need to take time with your finds as well to hopefully tie in the above christening with where this family above lived in hopefully Jena at the link you shared below, Mark.
I doubt that, Petra. Jessen is most likely identical with Jssen. Why? The German umlaut is the rounded version of the German e-sound (as is the rounded version of the i-sound). In the East and West Prussian German dialects, and were generally pronounced e und i. This goes also for speakers of Slave languages in the area.
Hi Rolf-Peter, Petra and others who have responded to my question pertaining
to Meier from Minden.
Just an update so no one will work on this request any longer. It did end
up being Jössen where Sophie Louise was born.
A cousin has found me by me writing this email, so a happy ending!
Even though I found the incorrect group to ask my question about my x2
great grandmother's birth location being listed in the local Indiana
newspaper as Jessen, Minden-Prussia, Westphalia and I have the wrong group,
I was still able to find a cousin. Accidents like this turn out rosy
sometimes.
Thanks again everyone for offering your generous assistance.
I will remove myself from your group and join the one (s) that pertain to
Jössen, Minden-Lubbecke, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
