Meier family genealogy

Looking for info on great grandfather. The only information I have is a
statement -
L. Frederick Meier immigrated to America in 1886. His birth place was
Engerode
Braunscleweig Prov. Hanover Germany, approx. 1865. His wife Dienna Leans
Miller Meier born Nov. 30, 1850 Questedt Prov.of Hanover Germany. Any info on
these town, or provinces or families would be greatly appreciated. They are
buried in upstate NY in our family plot.
Along with these children born in Germany----August Miller (2-8-1874) Henry
C Meier(3-2-1878) William possibly buried in Germany. Frederick Jr.no
date.Anna Viola Meier (12-26-1882) Gustave (10-13-1883)-Spohia Christine (9-4-1885)
& possibly Arthur C Meier.
   Thanks Jo Ann

Hello Jo Ann,

First of all, Engerode is a very tiny town in the Salzgitter area,
south and a little west from the city of Braunschweig. Use mapquest.com to
find it on the map. I see only a chapel there and the people probably went
to Gebhardshagen to the north. The LDS has only civil records from the
early 1800's. Not much help to you. I think that Questedt is probably
misspelled. I have tried variations on that town, but I haven't found
anything in that area. Since your great-grandparents were married when they
came to America, I would guess the town is somewhere near his. Evidently,
she was older than he and had been married before?

The dates appear somewhat strange. If there was a son Henry born in
1878, Frederick would be only 13 when he was born. Only 17 when Anna Viola
was born. Of course, anything is possible.

I had searched with the name Meier, but changed to using Meyer as well.
See here:
Meyer Friedrich Christoph Christian * 1834 Gebhardshagen ~ 1834
Meyer Karoline Dorothea * 1862 Gebhardshagen + 1949 Hornburg
Meyer Friedrich Christoph Christian * 1834 Gebhardshagen ~ 1834
Meyer Karoline Dorothea * 1862 Gebhardshagen + 1949 GedBas
Meyer Friedrich Christoph Christian * 1834 Gebhardshagen ~ 1834
Meyer Karoline Dorothea * 1862 Gebhardshagen + 1949 Hornburg

     This is from this website:
http://meta.genealogy.net/metasuche/index.jsp

Do a search there for Gebhardshagen and Meyer and you will find these
names. If you click on the arrow on the far right, you can see the names of
the Meyers. More importantly, you should find the email addresses of each
one and write them for more information. I know it is not Engerode, but I
am guessing that people from Engerode went to church in Gebhardshagen.

Do you have the immigration nailed down in 1886? That is good if you
did. Searches are difficult because of the L. before the Frederick. Do you
know what it means? I tried some searches with the name Gustave, their son.
The other problem is that there are several spellings for Meyer, Maier,
Meier, etc. And there are tons of each one of them.

I've spent a lot of time on this search and I don't like it when I
can't find really good information! I'll keep looking.

Good luck,
Barbara

Hi Barb,

I too am interested in a Meier family, as well as a Poppe family in Hannover.

I connected to the meta-genealogy site you recommended to Jo Ann. I entered Poppe and then Colnrade. I did get "hits" but when I clicked on the arrow on the right, I got a warning about the database.

Could you tell me what I'm doing incorrectly?

Thanks,

Marv

Hello Marv,

That website has been a little sluggish today. Maybe someone is
working on it. There was a warning at the top of the page, but I just
ignored it. (I always ignore warnings and plow ahead if I can). Just click
on new search (neue suche) and on the next page insert "Meier". It does
produce a lot of names. You can click on the names on the left for an email
address.

That is a tiny town--I'd be surprised if you find very much. Note
that the list shows 30 names at a time. Then click the button at the bottom
of the page to get the next page. The very last page has names from
Colnrade, but the "meier" is included in another name. At any rate, write
an email to Heinz Promann. Poppe is listed.

Barbara

Hello again,

Colnrade has a website for the church. You can write an email:

http://www.kirche-colnrade.de/

Email address is given for the pastor.

The neat thing about the website below is that you can just enter the
name of a town and it will give you all the surnames they have listed. Of
course, that'd be best for smaller towns! Not the city of Hannover!

Wow Barbara,

Thank you so much for the follow-up of Colnrade church website. I'll get an email off shortly.

Again very much appreciated. And I'll bookmark the metasearch site.

Happy Easter to you and yours,

Marv
