I have been trying to find information on my ancestor Albert MEHRTENS and wonder if anyone can help me.
Albert MEHRTENS was born in 1818 in Amt Osterholz, Hannover. Albert's father was Conrad Mehrtens a carpenter. Albert came to England in 1844. He became a British citizen in 1862.
I would like to find out details of his parents and where and when in Osterholz he was born.
Any help anyone can give me would be most appreciated

It appears that the last piece of information (two microfilm rolls) may have the information you are looking for. It includes the date your ancestor left the country and a period before his departure.
Of course you have to consider the fact that there might be another Osterholz in the area and the information I gave you is not relevant.
Others on the list will fill you in on that possibility.
I have a Familienbuch for the parish of Hambergen which I think is in Amt
Osterholz. There are quite a number of MEHRTENS families listed including a
Cord MEHRTENS in the village of Vollersode. Cord was a common diminutive for
Conrad. He had one son named Alert born 12 Dec 1817. I believe the name
Alert was often changed to Albert. If you think this may be of interest I
can pass on more details.
are you sure that your ancestor was directly born in Osterholz, because it is said "Amt Osterholz" what means "county of Osterholz"? You will find many villages and parishes in such a county. But I think you just have found the right place while reading Paul Scheele's message.
Good luck with your further research and kindly regards from Germany,
