I am seeking what the meaning of "Captain" would have been in 1748
and an example of how it is being used can be found at

The German word is "Haupt" and it has been translated for me as
"Captain" but I am not sure what it means.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have been very carefully studying your mail incl. your attachment.
1.) The handwritten copy: Pls state from what church and which place/country it was written.
2.) The meaning of "Captain" in those days can be a rank in the army, in the german army it equals "Hauptmann" or "Rittmeister".
I dont know in which country you live, but doesnt the US-Army as well as the british army have a rank named "Captain" ?
I have no idea since when the master of a seagoing vessel was named Captain.
