Just joined this list and hoping that some list members might be able to point me in the right direction. My 2nd great grandfather - Henry Mayrose - was born about 1850 in Oldenburg. I believe that he came to the United States around 1868 and he married his first wife in 1869 in New York City. After his wife died, he married again in 1899. He lived in New York City until his death in 1908. His 1899 marriage certificate shows his place of birth as Oldenburg and his parents' names as Christopher Mayrose and Marianne Lehonkuhl.
There is a group of Mayrose families in/around the State of Iowa (USA) whose ancestors hail from Oldenburg. Their family tree shows a Christopher Mayrose being born in Oldenburg around 1807 and marrying a Maria Catherine Schockemohle/Stockmuller. The tree shows three children of this couple - Caroline (born about 1853), Herman Joseph (born about 1854), and Barney (born about 1861).
I am trying to determine if my Henry Mayrose is connected to the Mayrose people who settled in Iowa (the older sibling of Caroline, Herman and Barney???). All I have at this point is the common birthplace of Oldenburg and Christopher Mayrose being the father of Henry and the other three children.
Wondering if there are church records, or other information, in Oldenburg that might help me determine if there is a connection. Appreciate any help!

Bill Mayrose, did you check this website?

Have you ordered his death certificate? The informant may very well have known his parents’ names.
Hi Monika,
Yes, I have visited this website. The information about Christopher Mayrose and his family is consistent with the Ancestry family tree for the Mayrose family in Iowa. If the information on this website submitted by individuals or is it from official records/documents? If the marriage date of Christopher and Maria is correct (May 1853), then it is unlikely that my Henry was their child (he was born about 3 years earlier). I guess it's also possible that Henry could have been married before Maria (maybe to Marianne Lehonkuhl) and Henry could have been their child. Both Christopher and Maria's religion is listed as "RK" . . . do you know what this stands for?
Thanks so much for your response.
Bill
Hi Dawn,
Thanks for your response.
I have Henry's death certificate as well as his first marriage certificate.
- The 1869 marriage certificate lists his father as Christopher and his mother as Elizabeth (can't make out her maiden name on cert but it is not close to Lehonkuhl, Whitman or Schockemohle). Henry's last name is listed as Merrows and I wonder if this was due to a language barrier as Henry had only been in the USA for a year or so.
- The 1899 marriage certificate lists his father as Christopher and his mother as Marianne Lehonkuhl.
- The 1908 death certificate lists his father as Henry and his mother as Louisa Whitman. Although the death certificate does not list an informant, I assume that it was his 2nd wife.
I am thinking that marriage certificate information is more reliable than death certificate information since the marriage cert info is provided by the individuals themselves. That being said, I do not know why his mother's name is different on each of the marriage certs.

Bill,
the marriage date May 1853 of Mayrose/Schockemöhle is correct. It had been
the second marrige of Christoph Jacob Mayrose. First spouse was Maria Anna
Stricker. Mayrose/Stricker had a son Henry Joseph born Oct 23rd 1847
