Hi Jo,However i have no numbers to use to get that funny B=ss.Try alt + 0223 I can not find out how to work the hamburg list of ship passage on ancestry.com. It makes me want to cancel my subsdcription. so if I could find the ship name and the arrival date i may have better luck at ancestry.com for passenger lists.Try going to http://www.stevemorse.org to find his immigration record. If Juergen Hch. Friedrich Meyer left germany 28.04.1869 when would he arrive in usa?It probably took about 2 weeks depending on the weather.Best wishes,Bobbi

Here is the whole list for the umlauts etc.
You need to keep the num lock lit!
Hold down the Alt key, put in the series of four numbers, and when you release the key the letter will appear on the screen.
Ä=0196
Ë=0203
Ï=0207
Ö=0214
Ü=0220
ä=0228
ë=0235
ï=0239
ö=0246
ü=0252
ß=0223

Or better yet, download "AllChars" software free from the Internet. You then
have "Intuitive" access to virtually all special characters based on the Roman
alphabet. ("ß, ä, ö, ü, ñ, á, à, â, ø, etc.).
