Hi, Rosemary! Happy new year! We, too, have ancestors from Mecklenburg-they came in 1852, but they also came through the Rochester area before coming to rest in Ohio. They were from the area around Rostock--which may not help you. We don't recall seeing Mamerow or Gelo on records from there. We found their places of origin through church records--baptismal records for their children listed birthplaces for them. So if you know their church (Lutheran is a good start if you don't) try checking early church records. By the same token--if you know what ship they were on, the Hamburg emigration lists will tell you their towns of origin. You can get them from LDS. Good luck!!

My research so far shows that they came to the US in the same year and may have come on the same ship. Family lore says that they were married in the US. Their first child, Mary was born in 1869.
