Mackenroths

I am searching for the Mackenroth family. My records show Adolph Mackenroth born in 1846 in Frankenburg Marburg son of Adam Mackenroth and Elizabeth Spender.
Was this area known under any name?

Maree,

I believe that the town you want is Frankenberg (Eder), i.e., the town of
Frankenberg on the Eder River in what is now the German state of Hessen.
This town is located about 20 miles (32 km) north of the old university city
of Marburg.

Note the "berg" ending rather than the "burg" ending. Frankenberg means
"the Frank's mountain". Frankenburg means "the Frank's castle". While
castles are frequently found on the tops of hills and small mountains, the
two endings have distinctly different meanings.

In 1846 Frankenberg (Eder) was part of the electorate of Hessen-Kassel,
sometimes called Kurhessen (short for Kurfrstum Hessen). After the
Austro-Prussian War of 1866, Hessen-Kassel was absorbed in the Kingdom of
Prussia, where it was part of the province of Hessen-Nassau.

Hello Maree,
I think you mean Frankenberg (Eder) [not Frankenburg] about 30 km north of Marburg (Lahn). The area is now Hessen, until 1866 Kurhessen (Hessen-Kassel), 1866-1945 prussian province Hessen-Nassau.
Sincerely
Wilfried (Petersen)

Hi Maree,

The LDS has microfilm for the Marburger Sippenbuch 1500-1850 by Kurt
Stahr. That would include all the persons living in Marburg through those
years. There is an index. I could not find it online. You would have to
order the films and read them at an LDS center. If you go to the LDS page
under place and go to Marburg--Genealogy, you will see it. There are a
number of other items you could research. Unfortunately, the church records
are quite limited.

The LDS has only 3 items available for Frankenberg. Could it be that
your Mackenroths lived in the general area between Frankenberg and Marburg
and not just those two cities? That would bring in many other towns that
could possibly be where your ancestors came from.

Hint, do lots of searches on Google for Mackenroth and the various
towns.

Good luck!
Barbara

Thank you Barbara and Wilfried for replying to my notice that has narrowed the area down a bit for me.

Hello Maree,

Adolph Mackenroth aged 17 years, occupation Schuhmacher, (shoemaker) departed Hamburg 15 May 1863 per the "La Rochelle" The 1863 Hamburg "departure" passenger list clearly indicates that Adolf was from Frankenberg, Kur -Hessen. The La Rochelle" arrived in Moreton Bay, Queensland on 10 August 1863.

The records you are looking for are held by Landeskirchlichen Archivs Kassel.

It would be a good idea to check the German phone book www.teleauskunft.de
for the name Mackenroth, descendants of your ancestors may still live in Germany, you should write some letters, if you make a family contact you may find that research has already been compiled or help may be offered to help with your research. There are not many people of that name living in Germany today, there is an Adam and an Adolf Mackenroth, who knows they maybe related to your ancestors.

Adam Mackenroth
Steinstr.18.
68623 Lampertheim, Germany

Adolf Mackenroth
Gertrud-Bäumer-Str. 22.
65189 Wiesbaden,Germany

There are only about 138 people by the name of Mackenroth listed in the German phone book, so it is a fairly uncommon name. Several Mackenroth's live in Kassel and these peolple would also be worth contacting as they are closer to Frankenberg than the above addresses.

Look at http://www.frankenberg.de/index2.htm

click on the English flag and a new window will open with a brief history of Frankenberg, then click on Bildergalerie in the top bar on your screen you will find great pictures of the "Liebfrauenkirche" a very beautiful church, place your cursor over each image to enlarge them for viewing. Contact me off line if you can't manage the site.

All your research for 35066 Frankenberg (Eder) Hessen can be done here in Australia, write to the Archives in Kassel for any records required. The church books presently held in the Kassel archives have not been filmed by the LDS. As your ancestors come from Hessen you should also subscribe to <hesse@rootsweb.com > as one of the subscribers on this list may live near Frankenberg or Kassel and be of further assistance.

I hope this helps, you did not indicate where you live, however we do have wonderful resources available here in Australia for research in Germany.
