I'm looking for the birthplace of Louis WEHRLEN. US documents (after he
immigrated) report him being born in Alsace-Lorraine region around 1836. He
married Susanne Nungaesusser from Kircheimbolanden. They had children
Benjamin about 1864, Mary about 1867, and Louis Albert in 1871. He
emigrated to the USA about 1872.
My aunt thinks now that he could have been catholic.

It would be very difficult for you to find your ancestor without knowing the birthplace. The online archives of Bas Rhin ( northern Alsace) : http://etat-civil.bas-rhin.adeloch.index.php. are giving the registers of birth,marriage ans death separatly for each commune.
Kirchheimbolanden is a city located in Germany in the Land of Rhineland-Palatinate Maybe you can try de make researches there..

der Name WEHRLEN kommt in Strasbourg/Elsass vor. Ähnliche Namen sind Wehrlin, Woehrlin, Werling, Werly, Woehrle.

The extra spellings are helpful. Now that you mention those, and the fact
there are too many towns to search (from Albert) I think I have to do this
different and look for his son, in which I have the exact birthdate. Will
