Lookup Request for Henry Peters

Hello again,

Some time back I posted a couple of requests searching for information about
the origins of Henry Peters and (I still haven’t given up but am getting
close). Every piece of information so far has led to a brick wall. I’ve
chased just about every bit of information I have found to ground. With the
exception of his first papers, I have been unable to locate all his
naturalization records; even with the assistance of the Minnesota Historical
Society. There is just this one last tangible hint that I request help on
and the FHL does not appear to have any of these films. It’s from an
immigration record for a Henr. Peters immigration stating he was from
Friedrichshöhe. I not sure if it’s him.

Transcription of record:

Henr. Peters

Occupation: Farmer, age 16, on the ship Wieland that departed Hamburg,
Germany and arrived in the United States on October 26, 1888. He paid for
the trip by “self” and was alone on the voyage. It was unknown if he was
meeting someone in the U.S.

His last place of residence was Friedrichshöhe

Province of last residence was “Prussia”.

The problem lies with the fact that Friedrichshöhe was for (4) places
(according to Wikipedia - Friedrichshöhe – Wikipedia)

Below is all the information I have collected to date:

According to his obituary notice, Henry Peters was born on August 24, 1871.

According to the U.S. Census records, he immigrated to the United States in
or about 1888 and settled in Lake City, Wabasha, Minnesota.

On Henry’s first papers, it states he is from the Empire of Germany.

On the 1930 U.S. Census, it states he is from Hanover, Germany.

He married his bride Elisabeth Thomford on January 29, 1895 in Brownsville,
Minnesota. Elisabeth was born in Houston, Minnesota.

John Holzworth and Lena Keeker are the witnesses to the marriage. John
Holzworth was a relative of Elisabeth Thomford. Lena’s relation, I am not
sure. I have not found any blood relatives of Henry to date. I believe he
came to the United States alone.

They were members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lake City, Wabasha,
Minnesota. The lady from the church found his death record and had him
listed as Henrich Peters.

Henry and Elisabeth gave birth to 2 boys: Rudolph Christ Peters and Otto
Julius Peters. Rudolph in 1895, Otto in 1900.

According to Rudolphs WW1 Registration card, his full name was Rudolph
Christ Peter Peters.

Henry passed away on February 4, 1835 in Lake City and buried on the 6th.

On his death certificate, Henry’s parent’s names are listed: Christ and
Maria (which really does not say much as these are very common names).

I have a memorial for them posted on findagrave at:

<Fred V Kimball (unbekannt-1944) – Find a Grave Gedenkstätte
90&> &GSmid=47667840&GRid=87463390&

More on Elisabeth’s lineage.

Elisabeth was born in Brownsville, Houston, Minnesota to Peter Thomforde and
Margarete Burfeinde.

Peter was from Essel and Margarete was from Bihusen. They were married in
Kutenholz. Elisabeth’s entire lineage was from the surrounding area.

Back to Henry:

Henry was not born in Hanover. The records have already been searched by a
friend in the archives and I’ve searched by film.

There is no record of Henry being born or living in the area that his wife’s
family originated from.

I’ve ordered a few naturalization records and only one is the Henry I am
seeking. This was the Empire of Germany record.

I have his death certificate, marriage certificate, obituary notice, etc…
None have provided any additional information to his origins.

To date, it appears that Henry arrived from out of thin air.

Any help would be really appreciated.

You are experiencing a similar block to my research. I have been looking for the grave of Heinrich Meyer and it requires a birth and death date for which I do not have. I only have that he and his wife Maria are the parents of my great grandfather Friederich Meyer (Fritz Meier) in Seguin, Guadalupe County, Texas. Fritz was a military man and I have no information, yet, on whether he was born in the US, however, it appears that military career as a choice was passed from father to son and I believe that Fritz might have been born in the US after all and that his father was military but that he emigrated to Texas from New York/Connecticut, instead of from Germany, and this is where I am at now.

If anyone happens across relevant records, Fritz is shown here:

I believe that I might have found his mother Maria here:

and this is an uphill battle because there is land grants/property that is falsly documented, among other things, and the descendants are rewriting history.

Was he in the US 1880 Census? In the 1900 Census? If he was not in the first and WAS in the second, he emigrated in that 20 year period and if the age is about right, I'd follow up and see if you can locate him in that area. Here's what I did one time:

I went online and found the web site for the German town office and sent an email in English .... it was answered by a guy in the water dept. who understood English and came to the USA every summer to ride motorcycles in the mountains in Colorado! He was just the right person, because he had the water bill database for every home and building in the town, with the occupants' names and addresses!

You just never can know -- take a chance! I did the same thing in Liverpool, England .... went to the city web site, got the email address of the city archivist on the web site and got tons of information from him!

I even got an email address for the guy who put up a web site for my second greatgrandmother's tiny village in the Rhineland .... he wrote back immediately ... offered to show us around if we ever got there .... we did, a year later, and he gave us his entire Sunday and drove us to ALL the villages where relatives were born!

Use Google and other searches, as they all have different responses ..... good luck, Maureen in Chicago

Hello John,

You could check LDS film #563184 for entries from(1887,#650-1035,to 1888 entries #1-670)& LDS film #563185 for entries in(1888,#671-1252, these are the *Hamburg Allgemeines Polizeiliches Meldeamt* records.

Passport applications recorded by the police information office in Hamburg. Each volume has its own index. Indexes show the name, birth date and place of the applicant, the year and file number.

If you find your ancestor in the *Meldeamt* records and he came from Hannover, as stated in the 1930 U.S. Census. You could check the parish records for Friedrichshhe see also(parish Exten) at:

<http://www.hist.de/info.htm>
click on:
Parish Registers of the "Evangelisch-Lutherische Landeskirche Hannover"

or go to <http://www.hist.de/yschaumburg.htm>

Possibly have to pay for any research undertaken, see home page:
<http://www.hist.de/hrs.html>

First of all you need to establish exactly, his full name and place of birth. He may only been living in Friedrichshhe prior to leaving Germany.

I hope this helps,good luck.

Hello

The current German telephone and postcode registers show the following
places called Friedrichshöhe:

38122 Braunschweig-Friedrichshöhe

31737 Rinteln-F.

06493 Harzgerode-F.

39326 F. near Rogätz Angern Wolmirstedt

98678 Sachsenbrunn-F.

The name Peters occurs in all of them. So I'm afraid this is not of great
help.

Hannover is the capital of the Bundesland (Federal State) Niedersachsen
(Lower Saxony). Until 1866 it was the capital of the Kingdom of Hannover, it
then became a province of Prussia. Looking at the above postcodes, the ones
starting with a 3 are situated in the Hannover area. I would first check
those.

When looking for the name Heinrich Peters, I found the following
genealogical website: http://www.josef-schnieder.de/index.html . However
this may not have anything to do with your H. Peters.

Kind regards
