Hello Mike,
Have you tried on Internet WHITE PAGES GERMANY ?
Looking up in the telephone directory might bring you some results.

Michael:
Here are a few ideas of where you might look for your grandfather:
I don't know the dates, but I understand that all the parish records have
been microfilmed and sent to Hannover archives.
Do you know if he had any brothers or sisters .. They may be easier to find.
You might send a letter to the newspaper in Hamburg. They might publish it
as a human interest story. Someone may recognize the family and contact
you.
Definitely put this same query on http://www.rootsweb.com;
http://www.genealogy.net, http://www.genforum.com; http://www.ancestry.com
message boards. Someone may recognize him or his family.
If he was a tradesman, he might need a license or is involved in a union.
You might check newspaper archives for the wife and/or children ... They may
have married or died ... The news story might help provide results.
I don't know about Germany, but in America, you can contact the Social
Security Organization with all the information you know about the 'living'
person, enclose a sealed, stamped envelope/letter, and they will forward it
to the living individual. This is reserved for emergency type ...
Inheritance, death, etc. but I am sure they would help you forward in your
case.
Someone already mentioned phone books ... The libraries in America have old
phone books. If you know he was there in 1955, the phone book would have
the address. If he owned the house, then you might be able to find him
through property taxes and sale of land.
I hope these give you some ideas.

Hi Michael,
Have you tried "Das Telefonbuch"? There are about seven Börger's listed in
the Hamburg area (No Johann's). That's a small enough number that you could
try writing (or even calling on the telephone)to each of them to see if there
is a connection.

You can try www.Switchboard.com and www.WhitePages.com
for current telephone listings in the USA for any name you seek.
Every European country has a similar online telephone directory, like
the one in Germany that is something like www.telefonbuch.de.
Hello Michael,
Information from the civil registration about inhabitants who were registered in Hamburg after 1948 can be obtained from the
Amt für zentrale Meldeangelegenheiten, Schwarzenbergstraße 21-23, 21073 Hamburg, Germany.
I suggest you write to the above address.
