Looking for a detailed map of Angelbeck

Thanks Fred. That's certainly good to know. As far as I've been able
to tell, there was only one Laker farm in Angelbeck, and nowhere else
in the area. I believe it was small, as the family was listed as
"Brinkkothners" in 1700. But they were also listed as "frei," which I
took to mean that they were free and owned the farm. But I could be
misunderstanding the document. The farm appears to have been handed
down through the generations for nearly 400 years, so I'm hopeful that
at some point it appeared on a map.

I have been on the Oldenburg archives web site and the
Niedersächsischen Landesarchivs AIDA online search, but I don't fully
understand what to do with the search results. Is there a way to order
photocopies of maps from the archives, or is it simply a finding aid
for when one visits the archives in person? My German ist nicht gut,
so my research has been a bit clumsy across the big pond.

Thanks for any and all advice.

All best,
Andrew Laker

Hello Andrew,

try this:

http://www.niedersachsennavigator.niedersachsen.de/nn/demo_pl/

then click on "Adresse" - put in the next window:
Straße: Angelbeck
Gemeinde Löningen

Then you have an old map - click in the right site of the map to center Angelbeck.
But there is farm names given.

Best regards,
Werner Honkomp

I assume you know that cottage = Kothe (or similar). The Laker cottage
was out on the brink and may well have been called the Laker cottage
over all this time. Doesn't mean that a Laker was living there the
whole time. Names of places took preference over what one was called
before moving there.

It would seem to me that you have to make contact with someone who
knows the local history and can help did all this out. Do you have the
genealogy for the family to document their lineage in Angelbeck?

Once I had all my ducks in order, I would write to the Löninger
Heimatverein who deal with the local history. You can find the board
of directors here: http://www.loeningen.de/454.htm

These folks are all educated enough to understand English and I
wouldn't be afraid of asking for something in that language. They have
email addresses. Give it a go.
