The tip I can give you: both Hersfeld and Kassel belong to the Hessen state (Bundesland) which has an own mailing list, so there it's more likely to get further help.
In case your ancestors have been members of the protestant church: Hersfeld church records (microfilms in the central archive for this part of Hessen in Kassel) date back to 1611!
