Letter about Auswandererquellen from Osnabrück

Hi,
as promised here is the response to my questions at the Osnabrück
archive. Let me briefly say that they didn't actually answer my
questions and sent info which is already on the website. I supposed
they have canned responses ready. At the very end is the crux of the
message - 1/4 hour costs 10 EUR and that apparently any request is
involved with such fees. They do accept checks though and will set a
price in advance which is good. My supposition is that one needs to
ask for certain people giving the file location where they can be
found and they will then search within these folders for the relevant
information and copy them for a reasonable copy fees.

I will ask for everything in any way connected with names I'm
researching and have this copied to 35 mm film which I will then have
converted to tiff images on CD.

We shall see what we get. I'm really curious as to how my folks who
did not emigrate are connected to this emigration data.

Fred

Does the 35mm film cost more than paper copies? That sounds like such a
good idea! What does one look for in the yellow pages to find a business
that will convert the film to tiff images on a CD?
Thanks Fred,
Maureen

Film is much cheaper. You know how it is when you need an address and
can't find it? That's where I am right now with the source of my film
to CD conversion. OK, some extensibe research found the place:
http://www.lorientech.com/ or info@lorientech.com

It's the best thing I ever thought of.

Fred

PS
Mikrofilmaufnahmen/35 mm (0,15 EUR +
1,53 EUR Grundgebühr), anfertigen zu lassen.

That means that they'll copy a page for .15 EUR with a base fee of
1.53 EUR which I don't quite understand if that's for one film or one
archive change or what. We'll find out though. The big saving is on
postage as paper is heavy and expensive to ship. CDs are not heavy.

Oh, so you will have THEM make and ship the CD to you from the Staatsarchiv?
Is it really that easy?
Maureen

The Staatsarchiv sends me the film. I send the film to the Lorien
Company and they return my film along with a CD with all of the film
images on it in a format of my choice.

Believe me, I've done this. The first time I made a mistake and
ordered PDF mode pictures. This made printing as is easy but changing
PDF format images for a closer look or whatever is not easy. So I
use tiff mode now to retain more flexibility.
