I have so many lines in
Germany that I need to find some way of translating German words myself. As
of now I have approx. 24 pages, although they are not full pages, of
typewritten German. One is the History of Neuenkirchen & the other is the
History of the Christophus Church in Neuenkirchen. I know of several who
have volunteered to translate but I will not ask them to translate 24 pages.
I tried to use Babelfish & some other translation site but they come up with
words that don't make sense. I have a very small German dictionary but I
don't find most of the German words in it. It is mainly for a traveler
visiting the country just to get by. Please if anyone knows a good book for
learning German I am going to the Bookstore tomorrow & may be able to order
it. I don't think I am smart enough to take a German language course, but I
would like to be able to find the German word & have the translation in
English. If anyone knows of such a book, please let me know. Thanks.

Have you tried these:

I think most words you are looking for should be in at least of these German
/ English dictionary sites.
Hi Geraldine,
I can't do anything in German but I have a relative who may be willing. Is the
Neuenkirchen you are alluding to, Neuenkirchen bei Vorden? Is the Church you
mention the Catholic Church. If you will let me know the answers to these
questions, I could snail mail this relative and ask. He lives in Liberty, Mo.I
can't make any promises since he will be 79 years old tomorrow and has been ill
this spring, but I can try.
Sophie
P.S. Our ancestors are from Neuenkirchen bei Vorden.

Sophie,
I see that some of your family is in Liberty, Missouri. This is not far
from Pyrmont (Missouri) where my ancestors arrived in 1854. They came
from Gross Berkel which is located not far from Bad Pyrmont and Hameln
(also known as Hamlin - home of the Pied Piper) near Hanover, Germany.
I am wondering if your ancestors also chose to locate in this area of
Missouri because they had friends/neighbors from Germany who had already
located in this area? I don't know where Neuenkirchen bei Vorden is
located, but Gross Berkel is West and slightly south of Hanover.
I understand that the first settlers in Pyrmont came from the Bad
Pyrmont area of Germany, so that seems to suggest that my relatives must
have known someone among the earlier settlers as their declared
destination at the time of landing in New Orleans in June, 1854 was
Missouri.
Do you have any insights?
