Gail: it will give you more details about each book than just the dates (Thank you Michele for answering Gail for me). Altho each volume is a stand-alone novel, it would be much smarter to read them all and not just pick out the period your ancestor lived in. That way you will get a more complete picture.
Barney: You asked for pertinent reading material - this is what you want. And don't let the fact that it is fiction turn you off. It is well researched and there are historical notes at the end of each volume separating fact from fiction - in a much easier read that merely dry history.
