Kruse Hannover

Hello Beth Carrick, M. Wallace, Tanya and others.

Reading through the archives there was a discussion in October 2014, regarding Anna Margaretha KRUSE.

The family name KRUIS is in my ancestry. Earliest members of the family were named KRUISHEGGE.
They lived in what was the Kingdom of Hannover near Freren - Andervenne – Furstenau about 50 km southwest of Vechta.
In the early 1800’s several members of this family migrated to the province of Friesland in the Netherlands.

One member of the family Gerardus Bernardus Kruishegge lived and died in Hannover (1777 Nov. 21 – 1825 July 19).
His wife was Anna Margaretha HATTING (1781 – 1826 Oct. 26).

Known children are;

Hermann Bernhard Kruishegge 1805-1882
Herm Bernd Kruis 1807 – ?
Anna Maria Kruis 1810 – ?
Gesine Cruis 1812 - 1854
Bernd Heinrich Cruis 1816 – ?

It is possible that one of the sons of this family had a daughter naming her Anna Margaretha after her grandmother.
A brother of Gerardus Bernardus Kruishegge, Johannes Bernardus KRUIS (1786-1857), named his daughter Anna Margarieta KRUIS (1821 Jan. 23 – 1871 Sept. 22)

This is just conjecture on my part, but this family may be a possible connection.

Our family lore never mentioned the Netherlands for this branch of the family. We do know that somewhere in this line the husband took the wife's name, as was often the case in Germany. I will have to check the Vechta church records. Thanks for your help.

Hello all,

I am not related to this family but was curious if it was the "norm" in
1800s for German husbands to take the wife's surname??

Please advise, Laurie

In certain areas, Hannover, Westfalen, Lippe this was quite common. Farm
names. If she had more property and he takes it over. Things of that
nature.

Laurie:

When you married the farm heiress you would take the name of the farm:
general region between Bremen and Muenster/Westphalia.
time frame: until appr. 1866, in spoken language 100 years more
