Kohlrust Family

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had any information on a Kohlrust family. Several
records I have found for my family, (specifically Heinrich Friedrich
Kohlrust and his family. He came to the US in 1871 - Port listed was
Bremen) site Hannover as the place of origin, but I have been unsuccessful
in finding any additional information. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you so much,

Stacy

Hello Stacy,

in 1998 there were 10 KOHLRUST having an telefone entry, from these 5 did live in or nearby the city of Hannover. So in your case there is a good possibility that not the kingdom , but the city of Hannover is meant. Here is the list of all countrywide 1998 given KOHLRUST:

- KOHLRUST, Albert, Helenenstr. 42,30519 Hannover, Tel. 0511-839517
- KOHLRUST, Albert und Dorothea, Reinekestr. 2, 30966 Hemmingen, Tel 0511 411292
- KOHLRUST, Anita, Lilienstr. 18, 30167 Hannover, Tel. 0511 714196
- KOHLRUST, Charlotte (Tem), Viktoriastr. 8, 12167 Berlin, Tel. 030 7525214
- KOHLRUST, Dagmar (Kir), Glaserhütterheide 23, 46244 Bottrop, Tel. 02045-81232
- KOHLRUST, G., Bruchweg 7, 29323 Wietze, Tel. 05146 384
- KOHLRUST, Heinrich, Lechenweg 4, 30938 Burgwedel, Tel. 05139 87203
- KOHLRUST, Heinrich (Lgh), Am Weiherfeld 7, 30855 Langenhagen, Tel. 0511 775909
- KOHLRUST, Rolf, Dr.jur.(Npl), Sonnenrain 20, 53757 Sankt Augustin, Tel.02241 331460
- KOHLRUST, Wilhelm (Stuhr), Kiebitzstr. 33, 28816 Stuhr, Tel. 0421 804606
- KOHLRUST-SCHULZ, Maren, 53757 Sankt Augustin, Tel. 02241 333956

there are variations of the name as KOHLRUß and KOHLRUSS (118), KOHLRUS (12), KOHLRUSCH (179)and KOLHRUSZ (2), even the 40 KOLHROSS,ß,S could be a derived writing of earlier times.

Inside parenthesis is given above a short writing for the part of town and then the total number of entries. The very nearby postcodes of 30519 and 30167 Hannover, 30966 Hemmingen, 30938 Burgwedel, 30855 Langenhagen and also 29323 Wietze show a comparatively close region, where your research should continue.

Greetings Hans Peter Albers, Bienenbüttel

Hi Stacy:

Hans Peter and Werner came up with a total of 13 names. It might not be a long shot after all. I believe it was Hans Peter who gave me a lecture (by List) saying that the surenames, of approximately 50% of the immigrants from Germany to the U.S., can still be found in the area those immigrants came from.

Was Heinrich Friedrich the only family member who immigrated? The reason I ask, is that it seems every family had a Heinrich Friedrich in it. If you have the names of other family members from Germany and their birth dates, it would be easier to nail down, and with only 13 people to write to ---well (;<)

Gale

Thanks again Gale. I have found a few other Kohlrusts that came to the
U.S., unfortunately, I do not know how they are related as yet. Most of my
family from Germany seemed to go fairly quickly to Chicago, IL (I believe
they were farmers). I do know that Heinrich's wife, Dorothea (Sophie)
Sophia Biester came over the same year (1871) and they were married in
Chicago. The information I have found also places Sophie from Hannover.
The Death certificate of Heinrich's sons (Henry and George) both list the
city of Heinrich's birth to be Hannover and Sophie's also.

One other question I had was, does anyone know (if it exists) a website
where you can order (or view) German church records online?

Thank you all again for your help!
Best Regards,
Stacy

Hi Stacy,

I couldn't find any Kohlrust or Köhlrust in the emigration records for
the Hannover region. However, I did find a Dorothea Sophie Biester and a
Heinrich Fridrich Wilhelm Biester with the same code number in the Hannover
emigration archives. They are listed as coming from Celle. If you think
this is your family, I can send you the information on how to find that
listing. You can order records from Hannover and they will send the
information for you for a fee around $30 or so. It will contain the place
of origin, parents' names, etc.

It is curious who the Heinrich Fridrich Wilhelm Biester would be. Maybe
her brother? father? And why is not the Kohlrust name listed in the
archives - I tried several different spellings, with and without the umlaut
or Koehlrust, etc. Maybe he didn't go through the formal process to
emigrate. That is very possible.

If you want the emigration archive information, let me know- it's
lengthy.

The LDS has some church records for Celle:

Kirchenbuch, 1706-1865 Katholische Kirche Celle

Kirchenbuch, 1709-1852 Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche Celle (StKr. Celle)

Kirchenbuch, 1757-1905 Evangelische Kirche. Militärgemeinde Celle

Kirchenbuch, 1802-1930 Evangelische Kirche. Garnisongemeinde Münster
(Westfalen)

There are many more records for Celle at the LDS webpage.

More! There is a Sophar Biester (age 16) on Castlegarden.org arriving
in the US with Chicago as destination Oct 23 1871 and a Heinr. Kohlrust (age
29) on the same ship named Baltimore. Sophar obviously misspelled.

Let me know if you want the emigration archives info.

Cheers!
Barbara

Thank you so much Barbara!! I believe those records may be my
gggrandmother! Sophie was born in 1856, putting her about 15 when she came
to the US. I would love to order copies of the records to be 100% positive.
