I am searching for information on the ancestry of Johann 'John' Kohl
(born about 1806) & Barbara Gerstner (born about 1814 in Mendel).
Census records state they were from Bavaria. Since I'm not sure of
the German territories back in 1845 when they emigrated, I'm at a
loss. I don't know if there was a town called Mandel in 1845 in what
was then called Bavaria or not.
I am also searching for their descendants. This family was Catholic.
Johann "John" Kohl and wife Barbara Gerstner arrived in New York
City, USA on 29 Aug 1845, on the ship Elizabeth Dennison from
Hamburg. I believe their
hometown was Mandel, Bavaria. Traveling with them were their
children, Barbara's father Jacob Gerstner and her two younger
siblings, Ursala & Joseph, plus probably Johann's brother Friedrich
kohl and family as they were listed on the ship's manifest. They
came first to Milwaukee, WI then settled in
Addison Township, St Lawrence and Slinger area Washington Co.,Wisconsin.
Later John Wolfe Kohl relocated to Wood Co. WI.
