Dear Leslie,
Hello once again!
The Evangelical church records for Guben for the years 1611-1870 have been
microfilmed and are available through your local LDS Family History Center.
Guben is on the Neisse River across the border from Poland. There is a
Polish city across the river named Gubin which was once part of the town.
Apparently there are civil records available for the Polish part of the town
for the years 1878-1890. I don't know if the civil records include the
German part of the town.
There are also civil records available for Forst, which is also on the
Neisse River and borders Germany. There are several towns named Forst in
Germany -- you want the one in Brandenburg that was part of the Lausitz
district.
I should warn you that it is very likely that your ancestor lived on a farm
outside of town. Many emigrants after they came to the U.S would say they
they were from a city near where they lived. This was the case with my
grandmother. For years I thought that she was from the small city of Stade
on the Elbe River (a very picturesque city, both when my grandmother was
young and today). Later I learned that she was from the farm village of
Wohlerst (actually I believe she was from Klein-Wohlerst) in the parish of
Bargstedt. These smaller villages are about 20 miles south of Stade.
I do the same thing myself. I tell people (usually in my e-mails) that I am
from Cincinnati when in actuality I live 20 miles north of the city.
I believe that we had a researcher at our Family History Center who had
ancestors from Forst on the Neisse River. She is a professional genealogist
and I believe that she found a contact (a distant relative who still lives
in Forst) who did some lookups for her in the local civil office. If you
get desperate, I can get her name and address if you want to write her for
advice.
