Hello Everyone,

I guess I'll join the listing of ancestors. There is a search page
covering the Hannover list that is quite helpful, but only goes back to
2004, I believe:

    http://www.mail-archive.com/hannover-l@genealogy.net/index.html

I thought there was another address that went further back, but I can't
seem to locate it right now.

My ancestors are from the Emsland area and are Catholic. I have copies
of the church records from Haren and Wesuwe. I would love if anyone has
access to the Lathen records! I am also interested in Haselünne and
Bookhof.

Names I am still researching are: GüGELMEIER, MERSCHER, MESKER, WERMES,
CRANGE, KRANGE, BOOK, BOOCK, COSSE, KOSSE, KOSSEN, DETERS.

I have information on LAMMERS, NIEHOFF, CAMP, KAMP, RUSCHEN, NORDMANN,
BOLLINGERFEHR, etc. These are from Sustrum, Ahlen, Dorpen, Huntel and other
towns nearby.

There are of course the archives of the list on
genealogy.net but mail-archive.com only goes back to
1999 which is two years short of the list archive.

Hello Barbara,

Merscher is a common surname in the Emsland area.

I have
[1] Johann Heinrich Merscher, b. abt. 1765, d. June 14, 1844 (my ggg-grandfather)
[2] Johann Gerhard Merscher, b. July 19, 1795, d. May 7, 1860 in Handrup (son of [1],
my gg-grandfather)
[3] Maria Engel (Eliza) Merscher, b. abt. 1806 (daughter of [1])
[4] Maria Carolina Merscher, b. Dec. 12, 1849 in Lengerich, d. Dec 3 1945 in Handrup
(daughter of [2], my g-grandmother)

Any connections?

Franz Felschen

Hello,

You didn't provide any first names. However, there is a Woltje family
who came to America from Bremen in 1852. They are from Wenzlar (which I
think is most likely Winzlar, west of Hannover). You can see it on this
page:

http://immigrantships.net/v4/1800v4/eberhard18521108.html

Barbara

Hi Barbara,
Thank you so much for the information. I knew about this Woltje family and
unfortunately as far as I know they do not tie into our branch. I know of
three brothers Henry (Heinrich?), William (Wilhelm?) and Eide(?). There was
also a sister named Dora. Birthdates from abt 1844 to 1854. The brothers
homesteaded in Kansas and Dora married and homesteaded with her husband
(Weiden) in Nebraska. William left Kansas in 1877 and went back to New York
(Long Island). All are very elusive. One older family member said there
were seven brothers altogether but if so have no idea where. It is said that
William my ggrandfather was a veterinarian in the Prussian Army but I have
no proof of that. I have also heard they left Europe of necessity but the
reasons are not known. Not sure if it was religious or political. They were
farmers except I do not believe my ggrandfather was suited for that life but
not sure of his reasons for going to NY.

Hello Franz,

This is what I have about the Merschers so far:

Bernardus Merscher and Anna Boockhoff,
parents of Anna Adelheid Merscher (born in 1729 in Haren)

Adelheid Merscher and Johann Wermes
Parents of Anna Maria Merscher born about 1756

I began my search with the name of Anna Maria Merscher living in Emmeln,
(church in Haren). Her birthdate is about 1756. I have the Haren records,
but unfortunately, there are no records for about 30 years (1741 - 1773 or
so) and her birthdate falls in that time period. From her death record, I
find her parents were Adelheid Mersker (born as Maria Adelheid Mersker and
Johann Wermes). The name is spelled differently, but that is not unusual in
early records. I don't know why Anna Maria Merscher took her mother's
surname(Merscher) rather than the father's name (Wermes). Maybe it's one of
those land ownership situation - I don't know how you determine that.

At any rate, there was a time when I thought that family may have been
related to the Gerhard Henirch Mäsker (Mersker, Mesker) born ca. 1755 in
Westrum (Herzlake) and died in Hebelermeer. I was aware of the Herzlake and
Lengerich Merschers, but never made a connection. When I obtained copies of
the Haren records I found earlier Merschers in Haren(Emmeln), as early as
1727. However I have not yet gone through the earlier records. Dealing
with such a large number of missing records makes it very difficult to make
connections.

I see your Haselünne address--do you by any chance know of the name of
Book, Boock, Cosse or Kosse? Three years ago we visited the diocesan
records at Osnabrück, but I did not have enough time to do all the research
I had hoped for.

I notice that your earliest Merscher has no birthdate. Do you know
where he was born? It would be interesting to know if there is a connection
with the Haren Merschers. Unfortunately, there is a 30 year gap in Haren
records.

Thanks for writing and I'll keep your email for future reference.

Barbara
