Julius Wilhelm (J.W.) Burgdorf

Good Morning Friends
On the Hamburg emigration list of 1859 my ggrandfather, Julius Wilhelm (J.W.) Burgdorf's Place of Origin is listed as Baddeckenstedt, a village near Hildesheim. Does the term 'Place of Origin' mean place of birth ot the last place of residence before emigrating? The church records of Baddeckenstedt have been searched for birth and confirmation data based on his birth date, 1823-1827. The search revealed nothing. Several weeks ago, March 22, I sent inquiries to several neighboring villages of Baddeckenstedt both email and postal mail. To date I have had no replies.
On the baptismal certificate of Julius' son he states that he (Julius) was born In Hildesheim in Hanover. Catholic and Evangelical church records in the City of Hildesheim have been searched with no positive results. Does the term Hildesheim in Hanover refer to the City of Hildesheim or to a geographic/political area that is similar to a county in the USA? Would it be worth the effort to research civil records in the City of Hildesheim and if so how would I proceed? I have been told that Baddeckenstedt does not have civil records for that time period.
I know there are many villages around Baddeckenstedt but my efforts thus far have been futile, and I am reluctant to broaden my search if my inquiries are being ignored.
Any advise or suggestion?
Max

Hello Max,

You've had your hopes up so often and then again disappointed. We
all wish you could find Julius. I don't know what "place of origin" means,
but it would seem not to be place of birth or it would say that. It
probably means last place of residence. That is just a guess on my part!

I looked at the LDS site for Hildesheim. Did you ever look at the
Emigrant lists that they have? There are two films, separated by date.
Maybe, just maybe you'd find Julius there.

Auswanderungen, 1825-1913 Hildesheim (Hannover). Auswanderungsamt

There's also some sort of census: Volkszählungen, 1809-1864
Census contain names of head of household, wife, children, servents, age,
religion, professions, and buildings of the city of Hildesheim, Hannover.

There are several films for that - you'd have to choose one with the
proper dates.

I hope you can find Julius soon.

Barbara

Hi Max:

I have found that there seem to be no absolutes in this genealogy search, just variable probibilities and plausable possibilities. Sound like a politician huh?

Normally, in 1859, a person's place of orign and place of birth were the same. However the baptismal certificate strongly indicates differently. By the way, does the certificate indicate the church, or if it is Lutheran or Catholic (St. Albertus Magnus)? Officials name? Others such as god parents? Holle, just to the west of Baddeckenstedt appears to have 4 Catholic Churches- St. Hubertus, St Andreas, St Marien and St Josef.

Do you have reasonable proof that Julius was born between 1823 and 1827. Was the search for 4 years or did it include 1823 and 1827?

The 1815 map does indicate that there was a (district) of Hildesheim, so the reference you have may be to the (district).

Hey! Just a comment. You probably know this, but there is a Burgdorf northeast of Hannover. Hey! There is another Burgdorf just 5-8 k north of Baddeckenstedt! Ya, everyone else knew, but I didn't.

Here is another item. It appears that Baddeckenstedt is in the Wolfenbttel administrative district. If that was true in the 1850's, the civil records you seek may lie in that direction.
