Nils
Maria Kirschbein was 20 yrs old when she departed Bremen for the USA
and was unmarried. She sailed on the ship Edmund and arrived New
Orleans within 10 days of Julius' arrival. I think this means
something but try as I might I can find no link between the two prior
to sailing. And I can find no marriage information after they arrived
in New Orleans. I have only found the family in Belin but have not
thus far pursed them. I have been told that there are no church books
or civil records in Baddeckenstedt prior to 1870. I plan to revisit
that data soon.
Thank you very much Nils. I had the pleasure of visitin Hildesheim a
few yers ago but spent only 2 days there and did only minimal
searching. I was too busy touring your beautifu country

Max,
Unfortunately, I can only offer some general and obvious hints:
- Baddeckenstedt (with an "e") is a small city 10 miles from the
city of Hildesheim. Till around 1800 it belonged to the "Hochstift
Hildesheim" (a political entity).
- Burgdorf is a small village close to Baddeckenstedt, the family
may have been named after it originally
- Have you tried to search through the church books of
Baddeckenstedt to see if Julius' birth is recorded there?
- Same for his marriage, this would probably give his birth place
and parents. Is it in the Baddeckenstedt church books?
-Potentially the city may have kept records of people living there
("Meldekarten") although that may have only started a bit later -
have you contacted the city of Baddeckenstedt for that?
- Do you know more about the wife's origin in Berlin, e.g. where she
was baptized? The couple may have married there as well.
Good luck with your search,
Nils

I have been searching for my ggrandfather Julius for over seven
years
without success. Hopefully I will get lucky this time and someone
out
there will have a clue. I especially ask listers who live or who are
familiar with the area around Hildesheim and Baddeckenstedt for
their
help.
On a son's baptismal certficate issued by the First German
Protestant Church of New Orleans, Julius listed his place of birth
as
Hildesheim in Hanover. In the Hamburg Emigration Index he gave
Baddeckenstadt as his last place of residence. He emigrated in 1859
to New Orleans, La. at the age of 31. He died there in 1878 at the
age of 51 years. I calculate his birth year as being 1827 but have
no
confirming evidence. I do have a death certificate confirming the
death date and have located his burial location in New Orleans. He
and his wife (Maria Kirchbein) had 3 sons, Max Charles Eugene (my
grandfather), Carl and Wilhelm., and one daughter Dorothea. Maria
Kirshbein was born in Berlin and she was about 10-12 years younger
than Julius. She died one year after her husband.
I assume he was Evangelical since he baptised one of his
children in
a Protestant church. A professional researcher checked the
Evangelical
churches in Hildesheim but found no Julius Burgdorfs. Could he have
been born to a Catholic family and later changed his church
affiliation? I have not researched the family books of the Catholic
churches that were in Hildeseim at that time.
If anyone, ANYONE, has a lead for me to pursue let me know. I
welcome any suggestion, even the names of researchers with a depth
of
information for that area. I am 85 years old and am not getting any
younger. I would love to fill in the spaces on my paternal tree.
Thanks a million,
Max
