I plan to go to New Orleans in a couple of weeks for at least one
more search. I plan to go to the Historical New Orleans Williams
Research Library. They have the filmed records of the First German
Protestant Church in New Orleans (now Trinity Church) and the Zion
Lutheran Church where my parents were married. Both have some records
predating Julius' life in the city. I also will search the genealogy
library in the city's main Public Library concentrating on City
Directories and obits. I will check cemetery records and the New
Orleans Catholic Diocece records in the event Julius was Catholic.
Barbie mentioned finding a birth record for Dorothe Burchtorff. This
is Julius' daughter for which I have a certificate. Barbie, where did
you find Otto Gennill. I cannot find that name anywhere. Your
references to Julius Burchtorf as a clerk and who died in 1878 are
correct. An obituary for Louis A. Burgdorf is my brother who died in
2004. The church is relatively new and has no archival records.
My hopes are that my trip will yield a reference to Julius' pre-New
Orleans existence in Germany, ie parents or siblings on a church
record. That would be icing on the cake. I may be able to link Julius
Wilhelm who arrived in New Orleans in 1859 to the Julius who arrived
in 1847. My wild thought is that the earlier Julius came in 1847,
married and his wife died. He returned to Germany, found a new bride,
sailed back to America and arrived in 1859. The only fact that might
support that is his age at the time of the second marriage about 35
years of age compared to his wife of 21 .
Wish me luck, Max
