Joseph Preis & Anna Marie Jochum Preis in Bavaria, Germany, Prior to 1884

I have finally managed to find a record of my great great grandparent Joseph Preis and Anna Maria Jockum Preis. Their son, Joseph immigrated to the USA approximately 1883/84 and married my great grandmother Helena Grove, whose parents were Francis Grove and Gertrude Traumann Grove.

The only thing my mother knows of the Preis line is that they came from the Bavaria area of Germany and that they had a big family. Maybe like 12 kids. And Joseph was towards the last of the line. We only know that my great grandfather Joseph Preis was born on 18 Dec 1863 in Germany and his brother Mathias (Matthew) Joseph Preis was born on 6 May 1856 in Germany. There is talk of another brother living in France but I do not have a name. Joe died in 1947 in St. Louis, MO. and Matthew in 1918 in St. Louis, MO.

Can someone suggest what my next approach should be to discover more about Joe and Anna Marie Traumann Preis in Germany? The family lore is they died when Joe Preis was very young (mid to late 1850's?) which is one of the reasons he came to America. I believe he came on the Ship CANADA. I know nothing else about his parents and only recently found his marriage record to Helena Grove in St. Nicholas RC church records in St. Louis, MO. Since it seems they did not come to the states, what records can I search on line?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Joe

I have sent Joe my "Suggestions for writing a Good Query".

I addition he should get some recent books on genealogy and family history research which includes internet research.

He should find out more about his ggps in the USA, such as naturalizations, ages in various Census, when and where they immigrated and what the the ggp's surname spelling in German. Preis is a good German spelling but Grove probably an Anglicization.

Bob,
Thank you for your suggestions. All I have to go on is what I have found in the MO State Archives Death Cert DB, census from 1900-1903, and some Ancestry Death/birth DB from my library. All have pretty much spelled the name as PREIS, (a couple used PRIES). Joe was a box maker and I was able to find a picture from a distant cousin of a box he carved with his name on it as PREISS and my mother thinks she remembers stories it might have been PREISSE, so those are the current spellings I have been using. The only real gap here in the US that I am missing so far are the naturalization papers. I guess that is where I should concentrate next.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Joe
