Joseph Cohorst or Johann Niemeyer

Hello to all,

I am new list subscriber, and I am very impressed with the information that
can be found here! I just hope this will help solve a few mystery's in my
family. A search of the list's archives turned up a message dated 1997/11/1
from Fred Rump, talking about the Tegenkamp family and Cohorst Family
traveling together to Teutopolis, Illinois. My question is if anyone has
any additional information on the Cohorst Family mentioned in that message?

I am descendant of Joseph Cohorst Sr. born in Germany. I believe his
parents were John and Catherine (Kenter) Cohorst (Kohrst), who remained in
Germany. Our family story is that Joseph Cohorst came to America when he
was 7 years old in 1845 with an older brother. They settled in Teutopolis
and lived with the Kenter Family, and then later the older brother left to
go further west and was never heard from again. I would like to find out a
village or town my Cohorst ancestors came from in Germany. Or if there is a
link to the family mentioned in the 1997/11/1 message, which mentions
Schwege near Dinklage. As far as we know there were only the 2 brothers that
came over.

I am also looking for Johann Henrich Niemeyer born Feb. 24, 1820. First
record found is of him in Cincinnati, Ohio where he applied for US
citizenship. He married Catherina Maria Kerch Sept. 22, 1846 and in 1847
they moved to Teutopolis, Illinois. We cannot find any mention of a town or
Kreis he came from. Our suspicion is that since he knew about and moved to
T-Town he may have been from the same area as the other T-Town settlers.

I have a lot of history and family information for people in the Teutopolis,
Effingham, Green Creek, Island Grove and Dieterich areas in Illinois, that I
may be able to help someone else with.

Other names I'm searching for are: Roepke, Dust, Wolfert, Tastowe,
Stadhofer, Feldhake, Steinke, Wegman besides, the Cohorst, Kenter, Niemeyer,
and Kerch Names.

With Sincerest Thanks,

Lisa (Roepke) Niemeyer
Effingham County, Illinois

I have a lot of Niemeyer family information that I would like to share with you.
Thanks

Hello Lisa,

my mother's birth name was Wolfert. The Wolfert in my database are coming
from 74238 Neunstetten, Hohenlohekreis, Baden-Württemberg. The region is
called "Bauland".

Where are your Wolfert coming from?

Sincerely

Harald

Hello Harald,
The Wolfert in my family was Barney Wolfert Jr. born Jan.1 1866 at Kreis
Coesfeld, Westphalia. At least this is what is written in the Parish
History Book. My knowledge of the the different German Regions is limited,
but improving, so I'm not sure how close these areas are, but I haven't
found many other Wolfert Families so far. The information on Barney Wolfert
Sr. is just that he was Born in Germany.

Best Regards,
Lisa Niemeyer

Hello Lisa,

do you know from which area your Roepke family came from? I have some Robke from Steinfeld and Damme.

Werner Honkomp

Hello Werner,
Excellent question. I just came from my mom's house where we were trying to
figure that out. On one of the certificate's it says: Reinhardt Roepke born
9-27-1848 in Dietersdord bri Falkenburg Rgb. Koes, lin Pommer. His parents
came with him to the US in 1867. ( Cristlieb or Christlipp born 12-22. 1801
and his mother Caroline Krauss (maybe Crews) Roepke born 4-26-1826). The
certificate is hard to read, so I do not promise the spellings are correct.
Do you think there would be a connection? Your insight is greatly
appreciated.

Lisa Niemeyer

Hi Lisa!
If this is true, your Roepke came from Pommern (now Poland).

Dietersdorf in Pommern near Falkenburg (Zlocieniec), county Dramburg (Drawsko). Dietersdorf does not exist any more I think. Perhaps the mormons have a microfilm.

Greetings Andrea!

Thank you for the information! I found the town Zlocieniec on mapquest.com
We had given up on ever being able to find out more about Roepke's but now
with help from you and the internet, maybe I will be able to finally
research my family further. I think it is interesting that Reinhardt and
his parents left Dietersdorf in Pommern and settled in Dieterich, Illinois.
It was always a mystery, that who we thought were the parents had Robke on
the tombstone, but Reinhardt spelled it Roepke.

I have never had to try and use the mormon microfilms, any advice before
trying to locate them? Are you familiar with this region at all?

Region vertraut an allen?

( I am trying out a new translation program)

Hello Lisa,

I think this are differents families, because the distance is to far for this time, about 700 miles.

To check the Mormons films (Later Days Saint (LDS)) you should call this internet adress:

www.familysearch.org - then under "Library" click "Family History Library Catalog"

Good luck,
Werner

Werner; Can you or someone enlighten some of us as to the Pommern area and dates. I, too, have an ancestor who registrated on U.S. cenus that he was from Pommern Prussia. He was born in 1809. Thank you for all the help you give us. Jenifer in NE

Hi Jennifer!
