I am new to this list and am listing my ancestors from Mecklenburg.
My immigrant was John Satow, born @1817. I have many letters (written,
of course, in German) from his mother who stayed in Germany. I did
find a lady in town who managed to translate a few of them, but said
it was very difficult because they were written in "Old German". She
also said they seemed to be a combination of the language which would
have been spoken in what is now Poland. From these letters, I did
find out that the letters had been sent from Glasin (1853), Glasin (1862),
Warnow (1864), and Wismar(1865).
From a ship record I found, it stated that his actual name was Johann Satow,
age 33 years, occupation was a cooper, place of origin was Grabow, Mecklenburg,
departure date was April 30, 1851, arrival was New York, and the ship's name
was "Miles".
His first wife's name was Dorothea Schultz (Schoess), and they had six children who
traveled on the ship with him and his second wife, Lizetta Bork. I was able
to find her last name by finding the original will here in our courthouse. He
had married her in Germany.
With the help of an internet friend who had access to church records, I was
able to find the christening record of one of his son's. It was from the
Gross Tessin parish and stated that the father's name (my immigrant) was
Johann Joachim Christian Satow from Krassow.
I don't think too many Satows immigrated to the U.S., judging from the lack of
information appearing on sites.
If anyone has any suggestions on where to go from here, I would appreciate any
help.
Thanks,
Becky

Hello Becky,
there are two Krassow in Mecklenburg:
Krassow in the parish of Lbow (Luebow) and Krassow in the parish of
Warnkenhagen. You know the probable year of birth so now you can order the
two films at your nearest Family history center (www.familysearch.org). With
a little bit luck you will find your ancestor. The churchbooks will be
written in a similar handwriting than your letters- not easy but if youve
problems to read them make a copy or a foto and scan it to the list.
Yours, Heike Carlsson
