To the list,
I have met my Brick wall years ago on Great Grandfather JOHANN JOACHIN
SCHMIDT. I want to make another try in case there is someone new on the
list that can help. (wouldn't that be grand?)
I will paste in parts of two family sheets at the end showing his two
marriages. Any help appreciated
Here is what I know about Johann Joachin Schmidt. We have the
information from church record that he came from Schwann Schwerin Rostock
Mecklenburg from church records where his first wife, Sophie Schuhmacher
was buried and his first two children baptized.
Then we have the marriage licence to his second wife Marie Nolte. We
have census records from Illinois and Nebraska showing the familys. We
have the church records from where he and wife Marie attended here in
Nebraska which show their childrens confirmations, marriages etc and his
death record which gives us the only clue his middle initial was "J".
This Lutheran church is only a few miles from me and I have copied their
entire record and had it all read to me what I couldn't read..
What we do not have is any record of him prior to his first marriage to
Sophia. No citizenship records, no Ship records or any thing to point
to where he came from except the vague Mecklenburg mention on Census
records. So unless something in Illinois unearths to point to a ship or
citizenship there is not much left except search the Schwaan record which
is available from LDS. I have had this record but I do not read the
German Script well enough to be sure I didn't skip something.
His obit says he was Baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. His
obit and Census vary a little about when he arrived in this country from
1849 to 1852.
