I have a question I hope someone can help me with please. An early
emigrant from Germany to Queensland Australia was JOHANN
FRIEDERICH STAHNKE who emigrated here to Brisbane Australia in 1886
arriving in Brisbane on board the ship "Dacca" on 25 July 1886. He was born
in the German town of Barwalde on 17 December 1863. He arrived here with
his parents and siblings. Soon after the family took up land at a location
called Coleyville South-west of Brisbane in 1887.
While in Germany at the age of 19 years he was conscripted into the
Germany Army on 10 November 1882. In 1884 he is said to have obtained the
rank of a non-commissioned Officer as " Aubere tatmasziger Trompeter",
which I understand translates as "Supernumerary Trumpeter". He was in the
Second Squadron ( Ulan) Regiment who had King Wilhelm II as its Colonel-
in-Chief.
I am in possession of a coloured photo said to be J.F.Stahnke in his
Trumpeters uniform, which is very elaborate and includes a flat topped
hat/helmet, black coloured with a large white feather or plume coming out
from the top of the helmet. There are also white coloured Epaulettes on his
shoulders and a large white sash running from his left shoulder down across
his chest to his side. He is holding his Trumpet under his Right arm.
My question is, can anyone confirm these details re the regiment name etc,.
Where was the town of Barfelde? What was the role of a Trumpeter?
Any help with these questions will be appreciated.
