Mecklenburg-Schwerin was an independent Duchy (like a small country) until the middle of the 19th century. It sided with Prussia in the Austro-Prussian War (1866) and joined the German Empire in 1871. Unless your great great grandfather was born the capital city of Schwerin, that would not be his parish.
For a long time I knew that my great great grandfather was born in Mecklenburg Schwerin, but all the records in the US only gave that information (one census only stated "Prussia"). But the Ship's Passenger Records showed that he came from Kraase, and further research confirmed that he came either from the parish of Gross Kraase, the larger parish of Varchentin, with Gross Kraase being subordinate to it.
