Don Knoepfel wrote to the list about the Degener family who records show arrived in New York 10/7/45 on the Emma. Also family history says the family left Hamburg and landed in New Orleans. From there the went upriver to Dunkles Grove, Il. He wonders how this can be. I went to the county library and ckecked Germans to America and indeed it reveals that the family arrived on that date in New York. Then I searched the passenger lists of boats arriving in New Orleans in that year. I could not find that the Emma docked in NO anytime after the 10/7/45 date. I have a similar situation where my ancestors arrived on the same date both in New York and New Orleans. I have never been able to learn why that is and thought that may be the same situation with Don.
Has Don checked the Hamburg Emigration list for the departure data?
It was not uncommon for New Orleans arriving passengers to head north on the river so it seemed logical that the history of the Degener family could be accurate but no records of their arrival in NO exists. Go figure.
