If I might make a suggestion based on my own experience with my husband's side. A story about his ancestors based on family lore wasn't making sense, either. It turned out to be true, but it was a different branch of the family (his maternal g-grandmother's family instead of his maternal g-grandfather's family).
Just a thought.
