Thank you for replying to my question in English.
I have my great-grandmother, Charlotte (Van Norden or Macke) born on 15
July 1868/9 in Verden, Hanover, Prussia. The surnames may have many spelling
derivations. Also, there is a town in Hanover called Vierden which is
similar to Verden only it is located further north closer to Bremerhaven on the
map.
I have already ruled out Verden as the birthplace because I hired a man who
looked in all the churches for a name close to the ones I mentioned above.
No results. He suggested that I look in the Hanover records in case she
was born illegitimately. I have not done this since I am unfamiliar with the
name and address of this department.
Besides her birth date, I have her death date as 16 October 1934 in Long
Beach, Los Angeles, CA. She was married twice: l.) Charles
Pithie/Pithey/Pitchie (from Scotland) in 1888; 2.) Alonzo Gardiner Simmons (US citizen from
Oregon) 1906. She immigrated to the US between 1883-1885 and lived in Bronx,
New York City, NY from 1889 until 1905. She had 3 children, Charlotte
Mackay (my grandmother) and 2 boys, Charles and George in NY. They all came to
CA at the beginning of the 1900's.
Her parents were listed on her death certificate as an "unknown" Mucklay
(her father) and Catherine Van Norden (her mother). Both of them were born in
Germany but were of Dutch heritage. Nothing else is known about them.
I would like to know who to contact in Vierden, Germany that could check
the church records for me.
Also, any other suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Vielen Dank!

Yep, we can handle English here, deep in the heart of Texas.......although
Spanish is giving us a run for the money.
Hi Carol,
there is a Vierden bei Rotenburg (Wümme), Lüneburg, Niedersachsen, between
Hamburg and Bremen.
Greetings,
Margot (Dierenfeld)

Hi Carol,
If it is the northern "Verden" that you want, here is a contact that might be able to help you. He is the "Ansprechpartner" for the city archives of Verden. His name is Herr Dr. Björn Emigholz and his email address is
bjoern.emigholz@verden.de
Hope this helps,
Klaus
