How is your German?

Hi Eric,
Well, I did go to the site you listed...the thing is, I already speak English and know how to pronounce Grandfather

  >Here you can get another "voice":

with "grandfather" as example:

I am hoping one day soon to make a trip to Germany to research there and I know that knowing how to pronounce these genealogy words will be necessary (my husband's cousin made a trip a few years ago researching his side and it was only because her brother knew some German, that they were able to get so much information on the family). I'd hate to miss any information on my family because I couldn't communicate what I need or am looking for.
I guess Wolf should let us know if he thinks his endeavors in this are worthwhile or not.
I've been enjoying the work he's done!

Hi Judy,

oh sorry .. of course you need the other way round.
Thats directly on the LEO page. Somebody told about this online
dictionary already on this list!

This should be the "english version", but maybe it still says
"Aussprache", when you press on those little speakers.

I am hoping one day soon to make a trip to Germany to research there
and I know that knowing how to pronounce these genealogy words will
be necessary (my husband's cousin made a trip a few years ago
researching his side and it was only because her brother knew some
German, that they were able to get so much information on the
family).

But I think her brother knew some "normal" german words, right?

I'd hate to miss any information on my family because I
couldn't communicate what I need or am looking for.

Many people in germany speaks english enough to communicate on that level.
I think you would miss a lot of information, if people tell you storys
about your family in german. If I think back to school time, 5th class,
my first year of english. I has not been able to understand somebody who
talks to me about my family in english.

Single words or some phrases one can learn online easily. But enough to
understand stories or be able to communicate. I'm skeptic.

Regards
Eric

Thanks Judy and Eric

for your comments.

grandfather - Translation in LEO’s English ⇔ German Dictionary

Yes, sure that's fine, but a lot more complicated than it is on our
website..

First you have to download it and then play it..

But on our site you will hear it at once..

I guess Wolf should let us know if he thinks his endeavors
in this are worthwhile or not.

Well, Judy, that depends entirely on how many visitors are interested
on this topic. I keep a close eye on the 'pagecounter' and it's getting
'slower' all the time.. meaning the interest isn't really that high..

I already had found some helpers for this project, but at the moment I'm
just
waiting how everything is progressing...

Talk to you later,

Wolf
