HN--Town location

Dear List--I am trying to locate a Town that was listed as "Borreubunch" in
a 1942 registration card in the USA for a FREDERICK KUHLEN, Jr., who gave
this as place of birth (May 7, 1891). He immigrated to the USA in 1899
although I cannot find him on Ellis Island website although he lived in New York and
New Jersey. I believe this town is in the area of Duesseldorf as my
grandmother (CLARA HOLSTEIN was in an Catholic orphanage in Duesseldorf) and stowed
away on the ship to USA.

How would they get her through entry at Ellis Island?

I am told my grandmother referred to his parents as Aunt and Uncle although
this was common I believe in Germany even if there was no actual blood ties.
However, the parents were Frederick Kuhlen and Clara Kuhlen and so with the
two names of Clara, I wonder if there was a relationship to Clara--

CLARA HOLSTEIN's mother was ELIZABETH LIEDTHE from Duesseldorf and her
father was KARL HOLSTEIN and they are listed in the 1889 City Directory--which I
wonder someone may have a website to access again.

Thanks.

I am not very familiar with the exact date but Ellis Island did not come into existence until after 1900. Prior to that they were processed at Castle Garden. Try that site.

Hi Clair,
If your grandmother stowed away, it is quite possible that she didn't go
through the formalities at Castle Garden.
My great grandfather, Heinrich BENJESTORF, stowed away and I have the exact
date of his arrival in New york (27 December, 1870). Not only does he not
appear in any of the immigration records or passenger lists, there is not even
any record of a passenger vessel arriving in New York on that day! I suspect
he stowed away on a cargo ship.

PS: Ellis Island opened for business on 1 January, 1892, according to
Wikipedia.

Hi Claire,

I checked the WWI draft registration cards and found the following:

Frederick Kuhlen Jr.
age 27 years
address: 69 Boorean (sp) Avenue, Jersey City, NJ
Born: 7 May 1890 in Kopenhagen, Denmark
Occupation: NY & Queens Electric Light and Power Company, Queens Plaza
Tall, Slender, Blue eyes, light Brown hair
Dated: 5 Jun 1917

If this is your guy then it appears he was living on First Street,
Hobokon Ward 4, Hudson County, NJ in 1900.
Kuhlen, Fred., born Sep 1862, age 37, married 13 years, born Germany,
parents born Germany, immigrated 1895
Kuhlen, Clara, born Feb 1867, age 33, marred 13 years, 1 child, 1
living, born Germany, parents born Germany, immigrated 1895
Kuhlen, Fred, born May 1891, age 9, single, born Denmark, parents born Germany

1910 gives similar information, although it gives pob as Germany for
all of them and an arrival year of 1894.

Hope this helps,

Joel
