Dear Joel--There is a town (Borre) just a few miles from Mon (Moen) in
Denmark. I think this was the town "Borreubund" referred to in the WWII draft
card for Frederick Kuhlen. Now this prompted me to do some history review of
Denmark!!
Family lure had it that my grandmother's (CLARA HOLSTEIN) family was "Von
Holstein" and was related to perhaps a baron. I see that there is a Fredrich
Von Holstein (1837-1909) statemen and that the area known as
Schleswig-Holstein was divided between German (Holstein area) and Danish (Schlesweig) and that
these two different cultures clashed over politics which caused problems.
One such problem was that the Dannish did not accept that a female could be a
ruling heir; whereas, the Germans wanted that because no male heir had been
born. In a convention of Malmoe on Aug. 26, 1848 Frederick Willaim of Prussia
yielded to the Danish demands. The Holstein estates appealed to no avail.
What followed was unrest--on February 1, 1864, Prussian hussars invaded
Kolding (Denmark), and in 1896 the Danish government refuse to allow Danish
optants expelled by Prussia to settle in Denmark.
Therefore, I am wondering if CARL (von) HOLSTEIN who is listed in the
Duesseldorf City Directory of 1889, and who, again Family lure, gave all his wealth
on his death bed to the Catholic Church to take care of his daughter, CLARA
born May 28, 1885, was indeed related to royal title in Denmark.
My grandmother never spoke kindly of the situation she was put into (an
orphanage) by the Catholic Church.
