Hi,
I can't tell you in detail. I suppose it must have been the political circumstances or maybe the hope for a better life in general.
Greetings from Germany
Oliver.

Hi Gina,
in the 19th century there were 3 waves of emigration from Germany to the US. The first 1816/17, the second from 1845 till 1865 and the third in the 1880th. The reasons for all these periods of emigration were economic crisis, bad agricultural conditions and especially in the second and third period of time political opinions. Between 1821 and 1912 nearly 5,45 Million Germans emigrated to the USA. Some more facts you can read here: German Americans - Wikipedia
Best regards

Hallo liebe Listenmitglieder / hello dear list members,
(english see below)
amongst generations of ancestors and their siblings I just found one person going to USA .. unfortunately I couldn't find further information on him:
Carl Wilhelm Ludwig BÄHR born 1815/11/19 in Muelverstedt (near Muehlhausen/Th.) obviously emigrated in 1845 ... but where did he go there, what has he been working, did he marry, did they have children ... ?
Rumours say that once there has been an international opera singer among the relatives - no idea of a proof yet ...
Thank you very much in advance for any hint,
summerly regards from southern Hesse,
Günther
