Arnold,
Then you say the unification came in 1871, the question is "when did
Mecklenburg join the unified German states?" Are we to assume this came in
1871 also?
I do want to know as my grandfather was born in Mecklenburg 1869 and the
family left for America in 1879. When the rest of the families came I do not
know. But, all living relatives except for possibly 3 people came to America
and settled in Akron, Ohio. It would be interesting to find out what was
going on in Mecklenburg at that time to cause that many people to leave.
Thanks,
Dolly

When Germany was unified on 14 Apr 1871 the new Reich (German Empire)
consisted of 4 Kingdoms, 5 grand duchies, 13 duchies and principalities and
3 free cities. These constituent members of the new Reich continued to mint
their own money until 1918. Thus the Unification of Germany did not abolish
the old organisations but bought them under one constitution. The reason for
people leaving has been discussed many times before and I don't think that
German unification played much part in it. My own family left in 1861.

Dear Dolly, I make a purpose, how you may write it. Peter
Arnold,

1869 YOU WRITE: Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin / North German
Confederation (or - less probable - : instead of "-Schwerin" you write
"-Strelitz", it depends on the town within Mecklenburg)
and the
family left for America in 1879.
1879 YOU WRITE: Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin / German Empire (or -
less probable - : instead of "-Schwerin" you write "-Strelitz", it depends
