History book

Can anyone recommend a good English-language history of Oldenburg
& Germany? I would like to put my family history in context, as I
prepare to do more research into one of my family line's origins in
Oldenburg.

I'm a descendant of Friedrich Renneker, who with his wife and 4
children emigrated from Fladderlohausen in 1835, per an entry in
"Zur Geschichte der Auswanderung aus dem alten Amt Damme (Oldbg.),
insbesondere nach Nordamerika, in den Jahren 1830 - 1880. Von
Johannes Ostendorf, <http://www.honkomp.de/damme-auswanderung/kapitel0.htm>\.
The entry read:

"Renneker, Friedrich nebst Frau und 4 Kindern bei Kolon Nemann zu
Amtern 6 1835 Fladderlohausen"

-- which I understand (thanks to some translation help on the
Niedersachsen message board on Rootsweb.com) to mean that they had had
on the farm of farmer Nemann in Amtern, near Fladderlohausen. I'd
appreciate any suggestions on how best to start researching this family.

Thank you.

Have you any dates of birth of your ancestors?

Werner Honkomp, Oldenburg

Werner; I, too, am very interested in Oldenburg history. This was good information. Thank you for sharing it. My ancestor; Christriech Fredrich Kuster/Kuester was born in 1809. He and his wife Dorothea Caroline Schunke/Schinke, born in 1824, were married in 1845. They had two sons, Albert, 1849 and Julius, 1853 born before coming to America in 1856 via Bremen to NYC. We have the town name of NeuenKoop, also Pommern, Prussia. They do not go together so, as of yet, up in the air as to a concrete place of birth for Fredrich. On his America Cenus report he records he was born in Pommern, Prussia. I have studied maps and it seems Oldenburg has remained separate. What was it's history with Prussia. The Kuster's were Lutheran farmers. Still searching for answers. Jenifer (Kuester) Nelson

Hello Jenifer,
I asked also member of an Oldenburg local list, but never have a idea.
The names Schunke/Schinke you can find more east part of Germany, also Küster's in this area. Maybe the town name NeuenKoop is not correct.
