Greetings All,
I've found an excellent website dedicated to the history of Oldenburg. The
author is a genuine historian and he provides wonderful maps of the
Oldenburg area through the ages. I think everyone on the list will
appreciate this link:
Kind regards,
Suzanne Berger
Hi, Susan,
yes, you´re right, it´s an excellent website you gave us to the list. I am
researching for ancestors who came from the "Oldenburger Münsterland" - now the
"Kreise" Cloppenburg and Vechta. You can compare "Kreis" with the US-Counties.
Many thanks for that help!
Greetings

----- Ursprüngliche Mail ----
I've been looking at some of the census records of German immigrants in US
and Canada. On a couple of occasions, I've encountered the given name
"Godlip or Godtlip." Is that a Low German version of "Gottlieb"? (a wild
guess here) Has anyone else encountered that given name?
Thanks.
Marilyn
Marilyn,
...
"Godlip or Godtlip." Is that a Low German version of "Gottlieb"?
this is neither Low nor High German; it's just what the census officer understood when he asked for the given names.
Nikolaus (Ordemann)
Thanks, Nikolaus. I can believe that after recently finding "Stalca" and
"Steelka" and "Stulkey" for Stulken. But I wanted to make sure.
Greetings from rainy Wisconsin.

Dear Gerhard, My german is really terrible...sorry about that!
I am seeking connections for my 5x great grandmother Margaretha "Gusfield"/ Gusfeld/ "von Gusterfeld" (1784-1853) ; born in Sweden or Northern Germany; lived 1810-14 around Karlskronne in Sweden, but may have family connections in northern Germany ; married an American, Robert Monroe Harrison,( born 1770 , Fairfax Virginia) later US consul to Jamaica.
Gusfield may be from a first marriage around 1807. Family lore says she was born "Oldenburg" which is close, phonetically, with Ordemann !
Maragretha was the ward of Count Axel von Fersen
Does this ring any bells for anyone?
Yours, Jean
Hi Jean,
sorry I can't help you. But maybe another member of this list will do it,
because meanwhile I learned that the ORDEMANN family is very large and
prevalent over the world.
Have a nice easter. Gerhard
