Hinrich Peters of Hohenmoor

Fred,

Thank you for putting together all that information. Initially I had thought
that perhaps this wasn’t the Henry Peters I was looking for when I saw your
response. Now I am beginning to think otherwise.

The Henry in my tree was born on the date below and immigrated to the U.S.
approximately around 1888, married Elisabeth Thomford and had two children
in Lake City, Wabasha, Minnesota. His death certificate states his parents’
names were Christ and Maria.

According to the information you found below; his mother was Margarete. The
info I found show Margarete’s parents names as Christ and Maria. Perhaps
Margarete died when Hinrich was quite young and was raised by his
Grandparents Christ and Maria. Another option is to try and locate a death
record for a Hinrich Peters in the area around Hohenmoor or Mulsum. This
being where Henry was born would answer the question of why he settled in
the Lake City, Wabasha area. His spouse in Lake City, her family was from
this area in Germany and Margarete’s brother Harm’s family all lived in the
Wabasha area. The birth date being the same also adds to my belief that this
could in fact be him. More research needs to be performed to confirm
anything though. I certainly very much appreciate what you have found.

Hi John,

The actual church parish for Hohenmoor is Mulsum.

The Selsingen Ortsfamilienbuch does not appear to be available at the
compgen.de genealogy site but is still available through the Bremen Die Maus
genealogy website Gesellschaft für Familienforschung: Die MAUS Bremen. Your ancestor
Henry (Hinrich) Peters is not listed in that OFB.

Hinrich Peters is listed in the Mulsum II Ortssippenbuch -- I have a copy of
that book on microfilm at my local LDS Family History Center -- LDS FHL
microfilm 1181531. The entry for Hinrich is as follows:

5088 o-o 1871 Hohenmoor: Margarete P., (aus 5077), * Hohenm. ? ... Kd.:
Hinrich, * Hohenm. 24.8.1871, (5097).

This record means that Hinrich was the illegitimate son of Margarete Peters
from family # 5077. He himself was father to a family that is listed in the
book -- the record for that is as follows:

5097 OO vor 11.4.1902 ...: Hinrich P., Hsl., (aus 5088), * Hohenm.
24.8.1871, und

      Gesche Tiedemann, (aus 6337), (oo I. 606), * Schw. 13.9.1877.

      Kdr. 1) Jürgen, * Hohenm. 11.4.1902, 2) Hinrich, * H. 12.8.1903, 3)
+* H. 22.4.1906.

This record means that Hinrich Peters married Gesche Tiedemann, born in
Schwinge on 13 Sep 1877. The date of the marriage is not known. Hinrich
was a Häusling, which means that he rented/did not own his home/living
quarters. Gesche Tiedemann was previously married (Family # 606 in the
book). There were three children, 1) Jürgen, born in Hohenmoor on 11 Apr
1902, 2) Hinrich, born in Hohenmoor on 12 Aug 1903 and 3) an unnamed son,
born and died in Hohenmoor on 22.4.1906.

Hinrich Peters' mother Margarete Peters was from family 5077, whose entry
reads as follows:

5077 oo 25.4.1818: Christopher P., Anb., (S.d. Johann P., Hausmann in Elm,
u.d. ...), * Elm ...., und

Maria Meyer, (aus 4284), *Ku. 21.5.1792.

      Kdr. 1) Johann, * Hohenmoor 24.12.1818, 2) Maria, * H. 16.2.1821, 3)
Sohn, * H. 9.6.1824, + H. 11.6.1824, 4) Harm, * H. 18.6.1825 (5083), 5)
Margarete, * ...., (o-o 5088).

This record means that Margarete, the fifth child in the family, was the
daughter of Christopher Peters, a Anbauer (farm-laborer) from Elm (then in
the parish of Oldendorf), son of Johann Peters, a Hausmann (farm operator)
in Elm and Maria Meyer, who was born in Kutenholz in the parish of Mulsum on
21 May 1792. Christopher Peters and Maria Meyer married in Mulsum on 25
April 1818. They had five children as follows: 1) Johann, born in
Hohenmoor on 24 Dec 1818, 2) Maria, born in Hohenmoor on 16 Feb 1821, 3) an
unnamed son who was born in Hohenmoor on 9 Jun 1824 and died in Hohenmoor on
11 Jun 1824, 4) Harm, born in Hohenmoor on 18 Jun 1824 and father of family
# 5083, and 5) Margarete, birth date unknown, head of (illegitimate) family
# 5088.

This is what the records read for this family. I recognize the large
difference in years between the birth of Harm Peters, the fourth child in
the previous family, and the birth of your ancestor Hinrich Peters, the
illegitimate son of Margarete Peters in family # 5088. Additional research
can and should be done in the Mulsum church records. The Confirmation
records for Mulsum (probably available as part of the LDS FHL microfilmed
records for that parish for the years up to 1852) may mention Margarete, the
daughter of Christopher, and give her birthdate and birthplace (if it did
not occur in the Mulsum parish). If Margarete was born in the mid-1830s, it
would be possible for her to have a child in the 1870s. If she was born in
in the mid-1820s, that becomes more questionable -- it is possible that she
could be the daughter of a different Christopher Peters.

I will look into this in more detail on Thursday evening.
