My great great grandfather was Johann Hermann Hillmann, born
1820, who emigrated from Brebber in 1870. His wife's name
was Sophia Worneking. I find the Hillmann family in the
microfilm census records (Hoya district) in the early 1800's
-- 1833, 1836, 1841, etc. -- but cannot read the father's
given name.
Where do I go next? How can I find documents like church
baptisms that will verify names and ages? The LDS library
offers "Evangelische Kirche, Kreuzkirche Hannover 1853-1874"
and the family was Lutheran. Will this microfilm have
baptisms and marriages?
Can someone tell me why I cannot find Berbber on
contemporary maps? I know that it is near Asendorf, south of
Bremen.
I have a Falk Autoatlas (Germany) and I find Brebber on that map--south of
Asendorf. I can scan the page and mail it to you if yu'd like. I don't see
a church in Brebber so I would guess the church for them was Asendorf.
However the LDS Library has no church records for Brebber or Asendorf.
There are records for Hoya, that obviously you have already seen. Let me
know if you want the map page.

Brebber is a part of the (political) community of Asendorf since 1973, but
has been part of the (church) parish of Asendorf for centuries. Probably the
parish registers are in the parish office (Kirchengemeinde Asendorf,
St.-Marcellus-Str. 3, D-27330 Asendorf). Yo can find microfiches in the
parish register office in Hanover (Kirchenbuchamt Hannover, Hildesheimer
Str. 165/167, D-30173 Hannover).
One other thing:
I would suggest that the wife of Johann Hermann Hillmann was named Sophia
Werneking since there are so many listed in the LDS site. They came from
Schlüsselberg which is not far from Brebber (to the south).
Barbara
As Barbara Stewart commented, the village of Brebber is certainly on
contemporary maps south east of Asendorf. I don't think the records of the
Kreuzkirche Hannover will do you any good. They will contain marriages,
baptisms and deaths for only that congregation. The LDS library should have
a Meyers Gazeteer which should tell you which parish the village of Brebber
was in. However, the LDS does not have many films of church books from that
area, but it is worth a try.
The Asendorf parish registers
are preserved for the following periods:
Baptismal Register - from 1655 on without any gaps!
Marriage Register - from 1688 on
(gap march 1694 to September 1713)
Burial Register - from 1688 on
(gap march 1694 to September 1713)
The are accessable at the Asendorf parish and (on microfiches -
only for the pre-1853 period) at the Hannover Kirchenbuchamt.
Brebber had 37 households (farms) in 1791. The Häusling
households are not included in these 37 households.
