Hello Corinne,

Block was common in Oldenburg. But your information is very small and I think we had more than was person named Hermann Block born about 1847. But it would help to know his religion. If he was Roman-Catholic he probably came from the southern parts of Oldenburg and if he was Evangelical from the northern regions.

I have done a bit more digging from my end, and all Hermann’s children were christened in a protestant church, not a guarantee, I know, that he was protestant, but the biggest clue I can find for his religion. It is also possible he had a brother called Gustave H Block who was born around 1851 in Germany, if that helps? Gustave was married to a lady called Gertrude, who was also German by birth. This couple were in the UK by at least 1878, as all their children were born in the UK.

I hope this may help narrow down the search a little? I appreciate any information you may be able to locate.
