Hermann Block

Hello!

I am trying to details of one of my ancestors who is from Oldenburg. What I know about him is:

Name: Herman(n) BLOCK
Birth: About 1847 Oldenburg Germany
Occupation: Mariner
He first appears in the British records in the 1871 census on board ship. In the 1881 census, against his place of birth he is also noted as a British Subject. I don’t know if this means he was nationalised in the meantime or had always been a British subject and just happened to be born in Germany to British parents so was a British citizen by parentage, (although his name sounds as if he could have German roots)

There seems to be a Hermann Block who lives in Oldenburg today if I look in the local telephone book, so I am really interested to hear if it is possible to find out more about my ancestor and his family and the German connection, so Iook forward to your reply.

Many thanks for your help!
