Hi All:
My second great grandfather, Henry Hilley, in most documents, is shown to
be from Hannover, Germany. In an 1880 Missouri census it shows him to be
from PRU as well as his mother and father. Does this give me a clue as to
where in Hannover he was from? Can anyone tell me what PRU stands for. Your
help is appreciated.

Hello:
PRU would stand for Prussia. The Province of Hanover became part of Prussia
in 1866.
In 1866 Hanover sided with Austria in the Austrian Prussia War. Prussia won
the seven weeks war and it annexed all lands that opposed Prussia. In the
1880 census Hanover would be part of Prussia.

It simply refers to the fact that Hannover became a (PRU)
Prussian province in 1865. Otherwise it still keep the origin
somewhere in what used to be the Kingdom of Hannover.
More then likely the origin would be in the Osnabrück area
from which most Hannover immigrants came. This area in
itself used to be a prince-bishopric and a separate country
until 1803.
