Henry Bruer from Hannover/Hanover

I am trying to determine where in Hannover my g-g-g-grandfather Henry Bruer emigrated from.

According to US Census records and other records I have been to locate:

1) Henry Bruer was born in Hannover in November 1822.

2) Henry arrived in the USA in 1850 and settled in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

3) He married Sophia Hannold, also from Hannover, in 1851. Presumably, the year she arrived in the USA. However, the 1900 US Census indicates she arrived in 1852, one year after their marriage. So, Henry could have returned to Hannover for the marriage.

4) In the 1860 through 1900 US Census Records, Henry Bruer lived in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. His occupation is listed as "Carpenter" or "H. Carpenter".

5) Henry Bruer became a Naturalized US Citizen on Monday, May 21, 1860.

6) At the age of 40, Henry served in the US Civil War in 1862 in the 12th Regiment of the Enrolled Missouri Militia for 22 days as a Private.

7) The copy of the Naturalization Record indicates verbatum: "...Henry Bruer a native of Hannover..and particularly to the King of Hanover.." Is there any significance in the spellings of Hannover/Hanover that would indicate Henry is indicating he was from the City of Hannover?

8) Henry and Sophia had 7 children, all born in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

9) Henry died in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, on 19 August 1904. At the time of his death, his residence was 1314 Benton Street, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

10) Henry's wife's (Sophia) maiden name is listed as "Hannold" on the 1913 Death Certificate of one of their daughters, Lena Kahmann (nee Bruer).

11) Sophia Bruer (nee Hannold) was born in October 1833 in Hannover, according to the 1900 US Census Record.

12) According to her Death Certificate, Sophia Bruer died on 26 January 1922. At the time of her death she was living at 4458 Kossuth Road in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

Thanks for any information. The above info is all that I am able to glean from the US Census Records, Missouri Naturalization Records, Missouri Civil War Recrods, and Missouri Death Certificates. I have not been able to find Henry or Sophia on any ship's passenger lists, so I am assuming they may have sailed from Bremen, or the last name is spelled differently than Bruer.

Sincerely,

Steve Bruer - A Native St. Louisian

Hi,

This is pretty vague, but I found reference to a Heinrich Bruer from
Lichtenberg. This is from the archives of Wolfenbuttel and I think it
refers to marriage certificates. There are other names as well. The dates
given are 1851 to 1865.

You can look at the records in the archives yourself by going to:

Run a search for Heinrich Bruer and you will get several returns. This is
one that I thought might be significant. You can order the records from
there. There are several Lichtenbergs in Germany, but since it includes a
reference to Wolfenbüttel, it may be the one in the Salzgitter area.

You can look at other returns on the search that may be more helpful. There
may be a lot of Heinrich Bruers. I find nothing there for Sophia Hannold.

Hi Barbara,
I took a look at the Aidaonline site you mentioned. It's the first time
I've visited it. For the first time in the four or five years I've been on
the list I've found a direct reference to my BENJESTORF ancestors (a VERY
unique name!). I found four references to the name in the Hannover
Staatsarchiv. Now that I've found them, how do I go about ordering copies of
the records? I couldn't sem to find any information on that on the website.
Thanks for your usual good information.

Hello Don,

On the far right side is "Archive in Niedersachsen". Go there and it
will list the various archives in red in the text. Click on any of them and
that should take you to the correct archive with an email address.

Barbara

Thanks, Barbara, I'll give that a try.

Hello,

I don't know if this is of of any help at all. And might not be right thread for this reply.

Someone wrote about connections of Bruer ancestors from Hannover to St. Louis, Mo. and searching Mo state archives online data...finding Bruer & Hannold??

Looked at Sophia's and Lena's death certificate..and mentions burial St. Johns???

Well stumbled across this... and I don't know if is of same place or not..

http://www.stlgs.org/DBlifeBirthsStJohnUCCBaptisms.htm

There is a Maria Hannath, Hannad, Hannadt married to a person Hauhard?? I don't know.. was speculating possibility..that this Maria maybe related to the Hannold m. Bruer..because of the St. John church name...and similarity of spelling.

Well probobly stupid post.

Warmest Regards,

Barbie-Lew
